Having great employees is key to business growth. But finding the right workers isn’t always easy. It can take a lot of work to find the best fit.

Here are 5 tips to help you get started:
- Write clear, specific job descriptions to attract well-matched candidates.
- Consider soft skills. Having the right technical skills and experience are important but also look for people who are a good cultural fit, have a positive attitude and are adaptable.
- Use diverse recruiting channels. Post the job on multiple job boards, ask current employees for referrals and tap into professional networks to help spread the word about your opening.
- Screen candidates. Use phone screenings, skills tests or trial tasks to filter candidates before bringing anyone in for an interview to save time.
- Consider growth potential. When hiring, don’t just look at today’s job duties, but how could a potential candidate help the business grow?

Taking the time to hire the right employee reduces turnover, boosts retention and improves your overall business.

When Jennifer Goeden moved to Iron River, Wisconsin, she noticed something missing—a local coffee shop. Turning that idea into Sweet Spruce Coffee took more than vision. It took a true partner.

Through one-on-one guidance from Kara Gunderson and the team at First American Capital Corporation, Jennifer navigated first-time financing, built a strong capital plan and gained support focused on long-term sustainability—not just a loan.

“I wasn’t treated like a number or a transaction. The process was fair, transparent and human—and that gave me the confidence to move forward.”

Sweet Spruce Coffee shows what relationship-based lending can unlock for rural entrepreneurs and local economies.
