For many OPERS LE Members, the pension will be the foundation of retirement. After spending a career earning that benefit, it's easy to focus primarily on one question:

"𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲?"

But as retirement gets closer, the focus should expand beyond your retirement date.

• What will healthcare look like?
• How can you manage taxes throughout retirement?
• What happens financially to your spouse or family if something happens to you?
• How will you use your investments?
• When should you claim Social Security?
• etc...

Your pension may provide the foundation, but all of these pieces need to work together.

Retirement planning isn't simply about reaching an eligible retirement date. It's about building a strategy for the years that come after it.

I spent some time at the CPD Academy today attending the Crypto Scams Summit.

As technology continues to evolve, so do the ways criminals target individuals, families, and businesses. It’s an important reminder that we have to stay vigilant—not only for ourselves, but for our loved ones, our communities, and the clients we serve.

A few weeks ago, legendary FBI operative Eric O’Neill delivered a powerful message to us as advisors at our annual conference about fraud, deception, and protecting those we serve. Today, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and FBI continued that conversation by sharing their knowledge and experience in combating financial and cryptocurrency scams.

One of the biggest takeaways was simple: We all need to slow down when money is moving.

Whether the transaction is big or small, ask questions, look for red flags, and pay attention when something just doesn’t add up.

Education and awareness remain some of our best defenses.

If you're an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper within a few years from retirement, your retirement date is only one piece of the puzzle.

Before you turn in the badge, there are several decisions that deserve your attention:

• What will your pension be each month?

• When should you begin Social Security, if you're eligible?

• What do you do with your deferred comp and investment strategy?

• How will your taxes change in retirement?

• What does healthcare look like between retirement & Medicare?

• And most importantly, is everything working together to create the
retirement you want?

The earlier you start putting the pieces together, the more options you may have after your final radio call.

You got a raise... but do you actually feel like you're making more money?

It's easy for our lifestyle to grow right along with our income.

A nicer vehicle. Eating out a little more. More subscriptions. Better vacations, etc.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the money you work hard to earn.

The problem is when every dollar of additional income becomes another dollar of additional spending.

Enjoy the raise, just make sure your future gets a raise too.

Every conference is a chance to step away from the day-to-day and think about how we can serve clients better.

This week reinforced several things:
• Technology should enhance relationships, not replace them.
• Financial planning is about providing confidence during life’s biggest transitions.
• The best advisors never stop learning.

I’m looking forward to bringing these ideas back to my practice and continuing to help first responders, public employees, and retirees navigate the next chapter of their lives with clarity and confidence.

Thank you to Cetera, the speakers, and everyone I had the opportunity to connect with throughout the conference. Investing in education ultimately means investing in better outcomes for our clients.

This weekend wasn’t just another conference, it was a reminder of what we’re called to be.

Our culture constantly tells men to chase comfort, status, and self. Scripture calls us to something far greater.

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13–14

Standing firm doesn’t mean being loud or never struggling. It means remaining faithful when the world pushes you to compromise. It means leading your family with humility, serving others before yourself, and having the courage to live out your convictions.

Grateful for the men who invested their time this weekend, challenged one another, and reminded each other that biblical manhood isn’t outdated, it’s desperately needed.

Now the real work begins.

America 250: Climbing to Glory looks at the history of Fort Drum in the North Country, talking with Fort Drum military veterans and 10th Mountain Division leaders in the North Country who have all played a critical role in helping America turn 250.

This week, I had the privilege of meeting with the Centerville Police Department to discuss financial wellness with their officers and support staff. It's always rewarding to help those who dedicate their lives to serving our communities.

I'd like to thank Sergeant Adam Bennett and Chief Matt Brown for the opportunity to speak with the Centerville Ohio Police Department. Strong leadership isn't just about supporting officers while they're on duty. It's about investing in them as people. By prioritizing financial wellness, they're helping their officers and professional staff build stronger futures both inside and outside the workplace.

When agencies invest in the financial well-being of their people, they're investing in healthier families, stronger careers, and more resilient organizations.

Not perfection.
Not wealth.
Not all the answers.

Just showing up.

Showing up at the games.
Showing up for the conversations.
Showing up when life gets hard.
Showing up consistently, even when no one is watching.
