No commute. No lunches out. Kids are grown. House might be paid off.
All true. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘶𝘱 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘵.

Here's what we see in the first few years. 𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆. Not from carelessness — they finally have time, and time was always the scarce thing. Time is what costs money.

🏔️ That trip you kept postponing? It gets booked.
🔨 The kitchen you've hated since 2009.
👶 Grandkids in Phoenix means plane tickets now, not phone calls.
🎣 Turns out the hobby you never had time for comes with equipment.
🎓 And the adult kid who needs a hand, because you're the one with time to give it.

Then there's the slow one nobody feels day to day. A retirement can run 25 or 30 years. What a dollar buys in year one and what it buys in year 25 are two different dollars. Build a budget on today's prices and it gets quietly smaller every year it's in use.

Ever wonder how the government comes up with the U.S. personal savings rate? 🤔

Roughly, it works like this:
💵 Start with income
➖ Subtract taxes
➖ Subtract what households spend — bills, interest, everyday outlays
🟰 Whatever's left gets counted as "savings"

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧. 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡, 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫. It's what's still standing after everything else took its turn.

And that's exactly how a lot of households run, too. Save what's left. 🕳️

𝑻𝒘𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕:
1️⃣ There's rarely anything left. Spending is very good at expanding to fill the space.
2️⃣ The number is incomplete anyway. It doesn't count capital gains from selling land or financial assets — real money, real households, uncounted.

So the country's measure of saving is a leftover with holes in it. Not exactly a plan to model your life on. 🧩

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫:
✅ Decide the savings number first
✅ Automate it before it can be spent
✅ Then build the month around what's actually left
✅ Revisit it when life changes — because it will

Move saving from the bottom of the list to the top of it. That's it. That's the whole move.

𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞.
New research from the University of Chicago and ADP looked at payroll records covering 16 million workers. During the 2021-22 inflation run, most companies held to their usual annual bump of around 3%, even as prices climbed well past it. By December 2024, 37% of those workers were still earning less in inflation-adjusted terms than they had four years earlier. That ground was never made back.

What struck me reading it: 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.

𝑨 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒇𝒊𝒙𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏'𝒕. Social Security has a COLA, but that adjusts the Social Security piece and nothing else. The rest of the income stack sits where you set it.

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. July CPI ran at a 3.4% annual pace, ahead of the 3.2% rise in hourly wages. Someone still working feels that as a slow leak. If you're taking income from a portfolio, the question is whether your withdrawal number was built in today's dollars or in 2021's.

Most people set that number once and haven't looked at it since. It's worth an hour.

Somewhere along the way, retirement got defined as a light switch.
𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭.

Some keep a hand in the business two days a week. Some consult in the same industry they just left — same expertise, none of the meetings. Some pick up something seasonal because they like being around people. Some go back after a year off because the quiet got louder than they expected.

None of that is a failed retirement. It's just a different shape.
And the shape matters, because it changes the math:

💼 Income for a few more years can mean pulling less from savings early — when those dollars still have the most time to work
📊 Part-time income can bridge to a Social Security claiming date instead of forcing one
🏥 Some folks stay on for the benefits alone, and that's a legitimate reason
🕐 Others discover the paycheck was never the point — the structure was

Working because you want to and working because you have to are two very different retirements, even if the schedule looks identical from the outside.

Know which one you're in. Then plan like it.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner died in July 2025. A year later, his widow and his mother were in court over his estate. The trust at the center of it was reportedly signed in 1996 — before he met his wife, before his daughter was born.

That's what the government figures American households saved at the end of 2025. Down from 4.3% the year before. 📉

𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵:
😬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 — and quietly decide not to look at their own numbers at all.

A national savings rate doesn't know you. It doesn't know you're covering a parent's medications. Or paying tuition. Or three years out from selling a business. Or that you saved hard for two decades and then had a year where you couldn't.

An average is a headline. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝. 📰
