🚨 Tax Extension Deadline Reminder for Business Owners

If your business filed a tax extension earlier this year, now is a good time to make sure you know your actual filing deadline.

đź“… September 15 is an important deadline for many calendar-year S corporations and partnerships that filed extensions.

đź“… October 15 is the extended filing deadline for many individual taxpayers and may also apply to certain business owners depending on how the business is structured.

One important reminder: an extension to file is generally not an extension to pay. If taxes were due earlier in the year, waiting until the extended filing deadline could mean additional interest or penalties.

Take a few minutes to confirm your deadline, review your documents, and make sure everything is ready before the last-minute rush.

If you need help getting organized or completing your filing, BFMS is happy to help.

Before You Pay, Verify.

The IRS continues to expand online access to tax information for individuals and eligible business owners, making it easier to review balances, payments, tax records, transcripts, and certain notices.

That access can also help you verify information before taking action.

The IRS warns that scammers may impersonate the agency through emails, text messages, phone calls, and even fraudulent letters. If a communication is unexpected, pressures you to act quickly, requests sensitive information, or demands immediate payment, take time to verify it first.

Before responding or sending payment:

âś… Review the communication carefully.
âś… Check your IRS Individual or Business Tax Account when applicable.
âś… Never share your online account credentials.
✅ If something doesn’t look right, verify before sending money or personal information.

Stay informed. Verify first. Act with confidence.

If you’re self-employed, own a small business, or receive income that doesn’t have taxes withheld from it, you may need to make estimated tax payments throughout the year.

Generally, individuals—including sole proprietors, partners, and S-corporation shareholders—may need to make estimated payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax when they file their return.

Why?
Because federal income taxes are generally pay-as-you-go. If taxes aren’t being withheld from your income, estimated payments are one way to pay throughout the year rather than potentially facing a large tax bill when you file.

And here’s the part many business owners don’t realize:
Estimated taxes aren’t just about income tax, they can also include self-employment tax and other taxes that may apply to your situation.

📌 Who might need to make estimated payments?
• Freelancers & independent contractors
• Sole proprietors
• Partners in a partnership
• S-corporation shareholders
• People with significant income that doesn’t have enough tax withholding

There are exceptions and additional rules, so the $1,000 number isn’t the only thing that determines whether you need to pay.

💡 The takeaway: Don’t wait until tax season to find out whether you should have been making payments.

If you’re self-employed or your income has changed significantly this year, now is a good time to review your numbers and make sure you’re on track.
