I just finished setting up my booth at the Senior Life Expo at the Kroc Center in Green Bay! I'll be here until 12:30.

If you are planning to attend the show it would be great to see you. Visit me at my booth to say hello.

If you know of anyone who would benefit from my services, I would very much appreciate you sending them my way. It would be my pleasure to meet them.

Are there many things more valuable than having a go-to person?

Plumbing issue? Call your person.

Car problems? Call your person.

Need someone to help you move? Call your person.

Need to figure out your financial life and how to retire how you want? Call your person.

And if you don't have a person, for something so largely necessary, it may be time to find one.

I've gotten a whole lot of calls this year from clients and friends of clients about market performance.

This is when my job gets difficult, as I have to sift through the political spin to provide non-partisan thoughts and real-time guidance.

If you need to talk to someone who'll ask you how you feel and how your situation has (or hasn't) changed, you know where to go.

My DMs are open.

The year ends in 5, so I'll soon celebrate a milestone birthday.

A large part of my job is talking through ideal visions of retirement: where you want to travel, where will your grandkids live, what hobbies will you pick up or continue.

A large part of my job is also talking through our lack of invincibility and what would happen if someone passes away unexpectedly.

These things got me thinking about making sure I had our plan written somewhere in layman's terms for my wife, should I unexpectedly meet my maker.

That plan also needed to include the right financial advisor to execute the plan.

At Edward Jones, we have a very tight-knit and caring culture. I personally know many advisors in my region that I'd trust with my money.

But who would I trust with my wife's future? My children's future?

Who would navigate that picture with the knowledge and clarity required, and most importantly, who will guide the person who just lost her husband?

I don't care about the biggest producers. I don't care about the smoothest talkers.

I care about who is going to listen to understand and work their hardest to make this horrible time as smooth and seamless as possible.

I care about who is going to guide my wife and children through something they didn't have to worry about before.

I care about who is going to respect my vision for my own family's future and help carry it out and make it a reality.

Simply put, I care about people skills, not the advisor's personal success.

All this reflection has reaffirmed to me that I need to continue to focus on the things I'd want my advisor doing with those I love the most.

That's the expectation everyone should have when they work with me.

Retired? Want to stay retired?

At this stage of your life, your advisor should be working extra hard for you.

They should be actively discussing strategies about giving the government less, and keeping more with you and your family.

If you are nearing or into retirement and aren't having these conversations, give us a call for a complimentary second look.

"I don't think she considered health care."

Those words were just uttered to me this afternoon by an almost-62-year-old who has already applied for Social Security and put in her retirement resignation.

She's been working with a competitor for 10 years.

Her advisor did nothing different as she neared the end, and just last week told her that she was all set and ready to go.

Naturally, I started asking questions.

Eventually, I got that response to one of them.

I feel zero confidence that they have a well-thought and well-prepared plan for retirement. I told them that.

I'm glad they sought out another opinion.

I wish they'd have done it a bit sooner.

Your advisor should be a lot more than an investment manager when you're in your 60s and hitting the Exit button on your career.

Things no one says:

I'm really pi**ed that I saved as early and as much as I did.

11/21/2024

I'm in finance. I understand people wanting to save money.

I have a simple process to determine whether to a) buy/pay for something or b) do it myself.

I feel my time is worth $XX per hour.

It will take me XX hours to complete this.

I will pay someone $XX to do this if I don't do it myself.

This is VERY basic and fails to take into consideration that a) I may not be an expert in said thing b) I may not have the patience for said thing c) I might just be cheap and that cheapness adds frustration and takes away my most valuable resource (time).

Some people think purely talking someone out of the most expensive product and into a slightly less expensive product is "doing the right thing".

And sometimes, it is.

Sometimes the most expensive thing is also the right thing.

And sometimes, talking them out of any sort of product altogether is the right thing.

You might need the sale, but people don't always need what you're selling.
