If you're taking required minimum distributions from your retirement accounts, you probably already know they're something you need to stay on top of.

What you may not have considered is how those withdrawals fit into the rest of your financial picture.

Things like timing, taxes, and charitable giving can all play a role in how you approach your RMDs.

This article from Kiplinger offers some good food for thought as we head toward the end of the year.

Required minimum distributions can be used as a tool to help lower your tax bill, smarten your charitable giving and keep your retirement strategy on track.

For many people, giving back is something they look forward to, especially around the holidays.

And while supporting the causes you care about is the most important part, there can also be financial considerations worth keeping in mind.

With changes to charitable giving tax rules in 2026, this could be a good time to revisit how donations fit into your overall financial plan.

2026 gives taxpayers a chance to revisit charitable giving. Whether you’re donating cash, stock or money from a retirement account, a little planning can go a long way.

McFly went back to Hill Valley's past, would you go see Grass Valley's future?

If you could travel 20 years into the future, what would you want to see in the community?

Maybe it's a thriving local business, a neighborhood park filled with families, or a nonprofit that's still making a difference.

The communities we leave behind are shaped by the choices we make today. Supporting local organizations, volunteering our time, and incorporating charitable giving into our financial plans are all ways to invest in the places and people that matter to us.

And while we can't predict what the next 20 years will look like, we can be intentional about the impact we'd like to have.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave in your community?

Year-end is closer than it feels. If you want your 2026 contributions to count on this year’s taxes, they need to be made by December 31.

A legacy doesn’t always look the same.

For some, it’s a scholarship that carries a family name forward. For others, it’s preserving land, history, or community programs.

Each choice tells a story about what you value most.

Every landmark, every trail, every story in Nevada County carries history worth protecting. Giving back isn’t only about today , it’s about keeping those stories alive for tomorrow. 🌄

If you’d like to talk through ways to connect your giving to local impact, I'd be happy to help!

Many people assume charitable bequests have to be set as a dollar figure. But tying your gift to a percentage of your estate allows it to grow or shrink with your overall assets.

This flexibility can help balance generosity while making sure your giving reflects your resources at the time it’s needed most.

Donating at year-end is common, but may not be optimal.

For some, spreading contributions over time, or making gifts in high-income years, can make both personal and philanthropic sense.

Harvard's Michael Norton has studied giving for more than 15 years. One of his findings sticks with me: people consistently predict that spending on themselves will make them happier, and they're consistently wrong. Spending on someone else wins.

We tend to underestimate how much we get back from giving. Worth remembering as our local nonprofits head into their busiest season.

Research shows that acts of generosity, like gift-giving, are contagious and increase happiness. Giving and receiving are also fundamental for good relationships.
