May 29 marks the first anniversary of my mother’s passing.

This past year has been indescribable. However, because Mom planned ahead, it also flowed. Her wishes were honored, her estate was settled smoothly, and I was given an incredible gift during a difficult time: space to grieve, and peace of mind.

It could have been a very different story.

In honor of her life — and what would have been her 88th birthday on July 26 — I’m passing on this gift within my professional capacity.

These conversations are acts of love. Planning ahead can spare your family confusion, stress, and uncertainty during one of life’s hardest moments. I didn't want to engage in them with my Mom. I'm very glad that she insited.
