A parent can collect $30,000 a year in Social Security and still qualify as your dependent.

The gross income test for 2026 is $5,300, and that sounds impossible until you see what counts. Nontaxable Social Security generally does not, so only the taxable portion, along with pensions, interest, dividends, and any wages, goes toward the limit.

The second test is support. You have to provide more than half of your parent's total support for the year, counting housing, food, clothing, medical care, and other living costs.

This is where most claims actually fall apart. Social Security your parent spends on their own expenses counts as support they provide themselves, so a parent living on a decent benefit can be supporting more than half of their own costs even when you cover a lot.

A parent is also the rare dependent who does not have to live with you. Support is what matters, not the address.

What it unlocks starts with the $500 credit for other dependents, which is nonrefundable, so it reduces tax owed rather than generating a refund on its own.

The bigger one is often medical. Qualifying medical expenses you pay for a dependent parent get added to your own for the itemized deduction above 7.5% of AGI, and the rules there are actually looser: you can generally count those expenses even if the parent fails the gross income test, as long as the other dependency requirements are met.

Head of household is the third piece. If you are unmarried and pay more than half the cost of keeping up your parent's main home, you may file as head of household with a $24,150 standard deduction for 2026 instead of $16,100 as a single filer.

When siblings split a parent's costs, nobody may clear the half mark alone. A multiple support agreement, filed on Form 2120, lets one sibling claim, as long as that person paid more than 10% and the group together paid more than half.

Are you covering costs for a parent right now, or is this the year that starts?
