Why AHIP Certification is Necessary (Beyond a State License). While a valid Life, Health, and HMO (LHD&HMO) license is a state-level requirement that authorizes you to sell insurance, it does not specifically cover the complex federal regulations of Medicare. AHIP (American Health Insurance Plan) certification is necessary for several reasons:

CMS Compliance: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require that all Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) sponsors ensure their agents are trained and tested annually on Medicare rules.

Federal Program Knowledge: Medicare is a federal program with specific marketing, enrollment, and compliance rules that differ from standard commercial health insurance. AHIP proves you understand these federal mandates.

Carrier Requirement: Most health insurance carriers will not contract with or pay commissions to an agent who does not have a current AHIP certification, as it serves as the industry "gold standard" for satisfying CMS training requirements.

Headline: Why Your Best Investment Strategy Might Actually Be a Strong Defense 🛡️

I spent part of my week analyzing a "risk gap" for a local business owner here in Grapevine, and it served as a huge reminder: Wealth Protection has to come before Wealth Growth.

Here’s what happened:
A client had a major gap in their employee liability coverage. When a legal issue arose, they didn't have a "shield" in place. Because of that, they were forced to withdraw funds from their brokerage account right when certain sectors (like oil and gas) were experiencing a temporary dip. 📉

Had that liability been covered, their investments could have stayed right where they were—growing and recovering.

Market ups and downs are normal, but being forced to sell during a "down" is how temporary volatility becomes a permanent loss.

As a Risk Manager (non-IAR), I don't focus on picking your stocks—I focus on making sure you never have to sell them at the wrong time just to cover a gap you didn't know you had.

Medicare is a federal program that pays for healthcare for persons over the age of 65 and for disabilities under the age of 65 or anybody who has been diagnosed with permanent kidney failure. However, Medicare does not pay for long term care services, it helps for short term hospitalization and skilled nursing services, as well as hospice care and home health care. Let’s face it, Medicare is an insurance resource we paid for in our employment years. Though it has financial limitations in funding our health needs, it could cover intrinsic needs for skilled nursing facilities and services such as for the first 20 days financial deductible for $0.00 and from the 21st day to the 100th day of hospital confinement, coinsurance is $217.00 per day. Imagine how it will look like without Medicare insurance, a semi-private room now costs $315.00 per day, and a private room at $370.00 per day.

When you join a Part C plan, you still have Medicare, but you get your Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage from the Medicare Advantage Plan, not Original Medicare. Instead of the government managing your care, you choose a private insurance company (like UnitedHealthcare, Humana, or Aetna) to provide your Medicare benefits. The government pays these companies a fixed amount to cover your care (recall your F**A), and the companies, in turn, manage your doctors, tests, and hospital visits.

If it can rain, it can flood. And most home insurance policies don’t cover flood damage. To make sure your property is covered, you might need a separate flood policy.

If your home is in a designated flood zone, your lender requires you to have flood insurance. A flood zone is an area that has a 1% chance of being flooded in any given year. But floods can happen anywhere. On average, 40% of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) flood insurance claims occur outside the high-risk flood areas.

Texas is particularly prone to floods, especially in two large parts of the state: the coast and a wide band called Flash Flood Alley that extends through Central and North Texas. Almost every major city in Texas is in an area at high risk of flooding.

Spring typically brings the most severe thunder and hail to Texas. The transition from cool to warm weather can create a lot of energy and moisture – and storms.
1. Check your home insurance policy to see if it covers wind damage. If not, ask your agent about windstorm insurance.
2. Consider comprehensive insurance coverage for your car. It covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire, and wind.
3. Put your agent and insurance company in your phone’s contact list. Make copies of your policy’s declaration page and auto ID card. Email them to yourself so you can get to them away from home.
4. Consider flood insurance. Most home insurance doesn’t cover damage from flooding. Don’t wait long: flood policies usually take effect 30 days after purchase. Ask your agent about flood insurance.
5. Remove dead tree limbs and branches that hang over your house. Tie down outdoor furniture and other items that the wind can pick up.
6. Make a room-by-room home inventory with pictures and video. This could help if you file an insurance claim.
