End of the pier in Palanga, end of the summer.

I spend eleven months a year being the person who brings this up and watching people change the subject. Fair enough — nobody wants to talk about it in the middle of a good year.

Late-summer storm season in Chicagoland. The four things that actually generate claims around here:

• Hail — roof and siding damage you often can't see from the ground
• Straight-line wind and tornado
• Basement flooding from heavy rain and sewer backup
• Fallen trees

The one that surprises people every year: standard homeowners policies generally do NOT cover sewer backup or groundwater flooding. Those are separate endorsements, and in a lot of DuPage County basements they're the coverage that matters most.

Check yours before the next warning, not after.

Owner-operators: leased to a carrier doesn't mean you're covered.

Their policy covers the truck under dispatch. It usually doesn't cover YOU as a person — occupational accident and workers' comp are different products with different triggers.

Last Tuesday's storm put 100 mph winds and six confirmed tornadoes across northern Illinois. Since then we have had the same three questions on repeat.

Here is the one that costs people the most money, and almost nobody knows the answer until they need it.

Your policy may carry TWO deductibles. A flat dollar amount for most claims, and a separate PERCENTAGE deductible that applies only to wind and hail.

It is a percentage of your dwelling limit, not of the damage.

On a home insured for $400,000, a 1% wind/hail deductible is $4,000 out of pocket before the policy pays anything, even if your declarations page says $1,000.

Go find that line before the next storm. It decides whether filing a claim is even worth it.

Landlords: does your lease require tenants to carry renters insurance?

Your landlord policy covers the building — not your tenant's belongings and not their liability. When their kitchen fire damages the unit next door and they're uninsured, that problem becomes yours.

My children speak Lithuanian. That is not an accident and it is not free.

It takes three things, and it stops working if you drop any of them. Lithuanian school here in the States during the year. Camp. And going back, so the language stops being homework and becomes the thing you order lunch in.

This was lunch. She ordered it herself.

People assume the summer trip is the holiday. The trip is the part that makes the other two count.
