n the 9th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need an advocate." So, God made an insurance agent.
God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, go to the office, work all day in the field, see all the people he or she could see, eat supper and then go out again and stay past late at night to share the importance of protecting what is important."
So, God made an insurance agent.
"I need somebody with conviction strong enough to withstand objections and yet gentle enough to speak of love. Somebody to call on many homes and businesses, tame cantankerous computer programs, come home hungry, have to wait lunch until his prospect is ready and willing to see him or her or maybe telling him or her to be sure and come back real soon -- and mean it."
So God made an insurance agent.
God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night designing a proper plan. And watch it die on the table of neglect or apathy. Then dry his eyes and say, 'Maybe next year.' I need somebody who can shape an idea, inspire a breadwinner or employer, who can make a promise out of a piece of paper, and a program into a promise. And who, will never give up until a promise is fulfilled, who will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, willingly put in another seventy-two hours."
So God made an insurance agent.
God had to have somebody willing to ride the streets and neighborhoods at double speed to get in front of as many people as possible to explain the importance of protection and savings and yet stop everything and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor's place or an accident that just happened.
So God made an insurance agent.
God said, "I need somebody strong enough to ask the right questions at the right time, yet gentle enough to speak of love and speak for those who are not able to speak for themselves, who will stop his busy schedule for an hour to help another in need of counsel and direction. It had to be somebody who'd listen intently and talk straight and not cut corners. Somebody to plant the seed of important planning, educate the importance of providing for the future, advocating for the children, delivering on the promises made, and after a week's work making it complete with a ten-mile drive to church.
"Somebody who'd bring a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son or daughter says they want to spend their life 'doing what dad or mom does.'"
So, God made an insurance agent.
I dedicate this to all of the wonderful agents I have had the pleasure of working with both at State Farm and American National.
Dad and myself after I became an agent with State Farm.
