Most GPS apps offer an alternate route.

Not because they expect the original route to fail—but because conditions can change.

Financially, a backup route may include emergency savings, protection for income, updated beneficiaries, legal documents, business-continuity instructions, or more than one source of retirement income.

A backup plan is not pessimistic.

It is practical.

You still hope to follow the original route. You are simply making sure one unexpected closure does not leave your family or business stranded.

Does your family know where important information is and who to contact?

Before turning the calendar to September, take a quick GPS check.

Did your spending match your priorities?

Did an unexpected expense reveal a gap?

Is there a financial task you keep postponing?

You do not need to overhaul everything at once.

Progress may be as simple as finding an old account, updating a beneficiary, checking your Social Security record, reviewing a workplace benefit, or asking one question you have been avoiding.

What is one financial task you want to complete in September?

A long trip requires more than filling the tank before you leave.

You need to know how far the fuel will take you, where you can refill, and what happens if prices rise.

Retirement is similar.

Building savings is important, but retirement creates a new question:

How will those savings support you for an unknown number of years?

Your route may need to account for inflation, healthcare, taxes, market changes, Social Security, and future care needs.

Retirement confidence is not only about how much you have saved. It is also about understanding how it will support the journey.

According to a recent report by Kiplinger, a growing number of families are turning to 529 college savings plans to build education funds for future generations.

The little-known update is assisting families in making the right plans for college, and helping savings go further.

Your GPS may offer the fastest route, a route without tolls, or one with less traffic.

The fastest option is not automatically the best one.

Financial choices also involve trade-offs.

The option with the greatest growth potential may look attractive, but it should also be considered alongside risk, taxes, time, access to the money, and when it will be needed.

A strong strategy is not simply about moving faster.

It is about reaching the destination without taking risks that could derail the journey.

Would you rather take the fastest route or the smoother route?

Social Security is an important part of your retirement plan, but when you choose to start claiming benefits can make a meaningful difference over time. While it provides a foundation for income, Social Security may only replace a portion of what you earned before retirement, which is why planning ahead is so important.

In some cases, strategies like working longer or waiting to claim benefits may help increase your monthly income and support a more stable financial future.

Let’s explore your options and consider how these decisions can help you build a retirement strategy that aligns with your long-term goals.

One reason I love the GPS comparison is that a GPS provides direction without judgment.

It does not criticize a missed turn or shame you for starting later than someone else.

It simply identifies where you are, where you want to go, and which routes may be available.

That is how I want people to feel when they talk with me.

You do not need perfect finances or knowledge of every financial term.

You simply need a willingness to look at where you are and begin asking questions.

Education comes first. The decisions remain yours.

If you're not talking openly with your adult children about money, you're failing to help build their financial independence. Here's how to keep silence from becoming expensive — for them and for you.

For most families, income is the vehicle carrying nearly every goal.

It pays for housing, food, childcare, transportation, savings, and future plans.

Yet many people have never asked what would happen if an illness or injury stopped that income for several months—or longer.

Preparing for that possibility is not negative.

It is simply recognizing what keeps your family moving and making sure one roadblock does not derail everything else.

How long could your household continue comfortably if one income suddenly stopped?
