I was part of my mother’s care, and now my father’s. The caregiver schedule in this infographic is a sample, but it’s close to the real thing.
My mother had long-term care insurance, and my father is on a claim now. It makes a real difference financially. But insurance doesn’t do the caring. Someone still has to be there: family, paid caregivers, or both.

Every situation is different. What they share is that the work never stops, emergencies are routine, and it’s hard to balance the caregiver’s own needs, the needs of the person receiving care, and everything else life demands.

If you’re caring for someone now, or expect to, planning early gives your family more choices and more support when it counts.

Public Service Announcement!

Open Enrollment for Medicare is from October 15th to December 7th. I’ll be helping people make changes to their plans and ensuring they’re still on the best drug plan – which is more important this year because upcoming changes will soon be announced. If you’re already enrolled, you don’t have to do anything. Still, you might want to check your coverage and drug plan because, after December 7th, you will not be able to make any changes unless you use The Birthday Rule (only available in certain states).

When people decide to self-fund their long-term care, they have no idea the choice they’re making for their loved ones. It’s your family and friends who will do their best to help you, but they have no idea what they’re doing or how this will impact their lives.

Caregivers are given a lifeline when their loved ones have long-term care insurance. Aside from the financial benefit, they have care coordination and can spend quality time instead of figuring out how to lift someone safely without getting hurt.
