Does having an agent matter?

Sometimes it depends on your situation. If you have a basic set up like a Renters Policy and a Liability Only vehicle, sure something that like that may not merit an agent.

But if you have high levels of coverage, multiple assets you insure or business insurance. Yes, an insurance agent would be highly recommended.
