Before you say “I’m covered” at the rental counter, take five minutes to check what your auto policy actually does.
Many drivers assume their personal auto insurance automatically handles every rental car situation. Sometimes coverage may extend, but the details matter. Your deductible, liability limits, type of vehicle, where you’re driving, who is listed as a driver, and even credit card benefits can all affect what protection you actually have.
A simple example: if your own auto policy has a $1,000 collision deductible, that deductible may still matter if a rented vehicle is damaged. The rental company may also have its own rules, fees, or loss-of-use charges depending on the situation.
The takeaway: don’t make the decision at the counter while someone is waiting behind you. Review your policy before the trip so you understand your options.
