It feels like summer just started, but August is already here and that means one of the most important times of the Medicare year is right around the corner.

📬 Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letters will begin arriving next month. These letters explain any changes to your current Medicare plan for 2027, including:

✔️ Monthly premiums
✔️ Copays and deductibles
✔️ Prescription drug coverage
✔️ Provider networks
✔️ Extra benefits

Many people wait until October to schedule their Medicare review, but by then calendars fill up quickly.

📊 Medicare Advantage keeps growing—but the pace is changing.

Some interesting takeaways from a new KFF analysis:

✅ More than half of all Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
✅ Enrollment continues to grow, but not as fast as in previous years.
✅ Some insurance companies reduced benefits or exited certain markets in 2026, leading many beneficiaries to review their coverage more carefully.
✅ This is a good reminder that the plan you chose last year may not be the best fit next year.

As an independent Medicare broker, I review plans from multiple carriers each year because networks, drug coverage, copays, and extra benefits can all change.

Medicare is expanding coverage for certain weight-loss medications; but not everyone will qualify.

Coverage depends on why the medication is prescribed, your medical conditions, and whether your Medicare plan covers the specific drug.

If you've been wondering whether medications like Wegovy or Zepbound might be covered, now is a good time to learn how the rules are changing.

Every Medicare plan is different, so don't assume what your neighbor's plan covers is the same as yours.

💡 Medicare Tip: A Hospital Bill Doesn't Always Mean You Have to Pay the Full Amount

One of the most overlooked resources available to many Medicare beneficiaries is a hospital's Financial Assistance Program (sometimes called Charity Care).

Many nonprofit hospitals are required to offer financial assistance to qualifying patients based on household size and income. In some cases, hospital bills can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.

I recently learned that many people don't know these programs exist until after they've struggled with a bill, set up a payment plan, or even been contacted by collections.

A few things to know:

✅ This is separate from Medicaid.
✅ You can often apply before, during, or after receiving care.
✅ Many hospitals allow applications months after the first bill arrives.
✅ Eligibility is based on the hospital's guidelines and your financial situation.
✅ The hospital makes the final determination.

If you receive a hospital bill that causes concern, don't assume you have to handle it alone. Ask the hospital whether they offer a Financial Assistance Program and what the qualification requirements are.
