Who is helping your unit's newest members figure out their first paycheck?

I still remember staring at my first LES and wondering who exactly this "F**A" person was and why he was taking my money. For a lot of young service members, that pay statement is the first real money decision they have ever had to make, and it shows up alongside TSP, SGLI, BAH, and about forty other acronyms.

After 21 years in the Navy, I can tell you nobody learns this stuff by osmosis. Somebody has to sit down and explain it. That's why my advisors and I are always glad to bring a financial workshop, Lunch and Learn, or webinar to your unit, your family readiness group, or your spouse's club.

I grew up in a military family and spent 21 years in the Navy myself. I know what it feels like to watch someone you love put on that uniform, and I know how much every family hopes and prays they'll come home.

For Gold Star families, that homecoming never came. Today I'm thinking of every mother, father, spouse, sibling, and child who has given more than any of us can ever repay. Your loved ones' service and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and neither will yours. I'm so grateful for you.

Fun fact: I went to a one room schoolhouse for grades 1 through 6.

I skipped second grade, graduated high school at 16, and went on to get a math degree from Washington State. Go Cougs!

Not exactly the typical path, but it taught me something I still use every day. When you're one of a handful of kids in a single room, nobody hands you a script. You learn to pay attention, ask questions, and figure things out.

In that little schoolhouse, I got the attention and help I needed to keep growing. My teacher taught me something I still use in my coaching and comprehensive planning: everybody deserves that same attention, detail and care.

Fall is officially here in Montana, which means it's once again my favorite season. (I say that every time a new season shows up. Spring, you're still in the running.)

Out on the ranch, fall means crisp mornings, golden fields, and my favorite comfort foods back on the table. I'm talking about a big scoop of mashed potatoes and a slice of carrot cake.

Tomorrow we celebrate the 79 years of the U.S. Air Force!

Full disclosure: I spent 21 years in the Navy as an E-2 Hawkeye pilot. But I grew up in an Air Force family, so this cake is served with a whole lot of love.

My dad retired as a Brigadier General in the Air Force. My middle brother retired as a Colonel, and my mom served as a nurse in the Air National Guard. So yes, I’m the one who went to the Navy. They still invite me to Christmas. 😂

Since September 18, 1947, Airmen have been guarding our skies and standing watch around the world. To every Airman serving today, every veteran who has worn the uniform, and every family who has held things together through moves, deployments, and long nights on the flight line: thank you.

I’m a professional… but I’m also a rancher 🤠

I was raised on our family ranch in Montana, and growing up, one of my jobs was helping nurse lame calves back to health.

I moved away for college at 17, and life took me well beyond the ranch for quite a few years. But about four years ago, Todd and I made our way back to that same ranch, and now, all these years later, I find myself right back where it all started.

Caring for calves, getting my hands dirty, and putting some of those childhood lessons back to work ~~ and I wouldn't have it any other way!
