Who actually needs life insurance? I tend to see that most people are underinsured rather than over insured . Sometimes they think their employer provided coverage is enough. Others don’t know where to start in determining how much they need.
Here’s an overgeneralized list of questions to consider when thinking through whether you should obtain or increase your life insurance.
Do you have people financially dependent on you? This is commonly a spouse, kids, or aging parents you help support.
If your income stopped tomorrow, would it have a life altering impact on someone else?
Do you carry debt that you wouldn’t want to leave as a burden if something happened to you? This might be a mortgage, a business loan, education funding, etc.
Are you a business owner whose absence would financially hurt the business itself, or the ability to transition it to the next steward?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you probably need life insurance. The honest answer for most working adults with a family isn’t “do I need this?” It’s “how much, and what kind?”
Genuinely curious how many people reading this have never actually thought about this decision.
