There's a lot more to 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘀 than simply putting a sticker on your terminal.

And just because your payment processor tells you your program is 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 doesn't necessarily mean it is.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

This is an actual Visa surcharge violation notice sent to a merchant after a customer complained about being charged more than the advertised price, with no signage explaining the difference.

The notice warns of a 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 $𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗳𝗲𝗲 if the violation is confirmed, along with the possibility of losing their merchant account.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Proper pricing, clear signage, accurate receipts, and following card brand rules are all part of setting up a program correctly.

Unfortunately, not every payment processor takes the time to make sure those details are handled properly.

Dual pricing is pretty simple once you take all the processing jargon out of it.

A business displays two prices: one for cash and one for card. The customer gets to choose how they want to pay, and they can clearly see the price for each option before they do.
