It may seem more efficient to ask the congregation to address both needs at the same time. But in our experience, keeping the two efforts separate is usually the better approach.

Why?

They have different purposes and different messages.

Annual stewardship provides the ongoing resources needed to support ministry, staffing, programs and day-to-day operations.
A capital campaign invites people to make an extraordinary gift toward a specific, extraordinary need—such as a building project, major renovation or debt reduction.

When the two are combined, the message can become less clear. People may be unsure whether they are being asked to increase their regular giving, make a special capital gift, or both.

Keeping them separate allows each effort to have its own purpose, story and invitation to give.

And ultimately, clarity matters. When people understand exactly what they are being asked to support, churches are better positioned to engage their congregation and maximize the potential of each giving opportunity.
