Welcome to Home Insurance 101
Last week we talked auto. This week the home.
Your home declarations page is the policy's quick-reference sheet. It shows the insured, property address, policy dates, coverage limits, deductibles, premium, and often endorsements and mortgage information. A great page to print and keep on hand
Coverage A -Dwelling
Covers the insured dwelling and attached structures, such as an attached garage, for covered causes of loss. Not to be confused with selling price.
Coverage B ~ Other Structures
Covers eligible structures on the insured premises that are not attached to the house.
Examples: A detached garage, storage shed, fence, gazebo, or workshop.
Coverage C ~ Personal Property
Covers eligible personal belongings, subject to the policy's covered-loss requirements and limitations.
Examples: Furniture, clothing, televisions, kitchen appliances that aren't built in, and other household possessions
Coverage D ~ Loss of Use
Helps pay eligible additional living expenses when a covered loss makes the home unfit to live in.
Examples: Hotel bills, additional meal costs, and other necessary increases in living expenses while the home is being repaired
Coverage E ~ Personal Liability
Can protect an insured against covered claims for bodily injury or property damage to others when the insured is legally responsible.
Examples: A visitor is injured because of a covered negligent condition. The insured's dog injures a visitor, subject to policy terms and exclusions.
Coverage F ~ Medical Payments to Others
Can pay eligible medical expenses for someone injured under circumstances covered by this section, often without requiring proof that the insured was legally liable.
Examples: A guest trips on the property and needs medical attention
Important: A $500,000 Coverage A limit does not mean the home would sell for $500,000. It is intended to address the insured dwelling's covered rebuilding exposure, subject to the policy's settlement provisions and limits
