Opening your own agency? Most states require two licenses, not one.

Your producer license lets you sell insurance. If you set up your agency as an LLC or corporation, most states want the agency licensed too, in its own name. That license also names a designated responsible licensed producer (DRLP), the person accountable for the agency's compliance. In a one-owner agency, that's usually you.

Requirements vary by state, so check your state Department of Insurance site before you file.
