Freight brokers: Why are truckers being denied loads because of their auto liability insurer when they carry the required AL limits and have cargo insurance with an A-rated company?

Motor truck cargo insurance responds to covered loss or damage to the freight you hired them to transport. Whether their AL insurer pays an accident claim involving another vehicle does not determine whether their separate cargo policy covers the lost freight.

An established trucker can haul for a broker for two or three years, choose a more affordable AL policy, and suddenly become ineligible because the insurer is an RRG or certain non-admitted carrier. New ventures purchase coverage meeting the required limits, then discover brokers won’t give them loads.

That has real consequences for small trucking businesses.

If there is a specific coverage gap, contractual requirement, or financial concern behind these restrictions, explain it. Simply saying “we don’t accept that insurance company” does not explain what protection is missing.

What specific exposure are these blanket AL restrictions addressing—and why isn’t the cargo insurer receiving the same scrutiny when that is the policy protecting the freight?
