The Company
National Insurance Corporation Limited (NIC) is a leading provider of insurance and financial services in Uganda. The Company which was established in 1964 was rebranded in a maj

or corporate refocusing initiative to reposition it as the insurance company of choice in the financial sub-sector. IGI, core investor in NIC, is the largest private sector insurer and the fastest growing insurance company in Nigeria, with premium income in excess of USD$230 million. IGI is an insurance giant with presence in Ghana, Gambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Europe and America; IGI has increased its profits every year of its operation and has paid dividends for 14 consecutive years. NIC transformed into a wholly privately owned insurance company after a successful Initial Public Offer (IPO) and consequently it’s listing on the Uganda Securities exchange (USE). NIC is the first local insurance Company to be listed on the Uganda Stock Exchange on a National scale. As the largest Life and Pension carrier in Uganda with an asset base of over Shs. 85 billion, NIC has the reputation for exceptional competence in the delivery of customer-centric service and product innovation. In 2010, NIC paid over 18 billion in compensation of the Uganda Police helicopter and to Makerere University Deposit Administration Plan (DAP) stakeholders. In 2006, NIC paid 13 billion Ugandan shillings (UGX11billion), being the largest claim in the Ugandan insurance industry, to the Government of Uganda on the loss of the crashed M1-172 Presidential Helicopter and as compensation to the beneficiaries of the deceased crew and passengers in the helicopter.

What happens if everything goes wrong when you are far from home? Who do you turn to? And when you are no longer there, who stands with the family you leave behind?

This afternoon, we were joined by the family of the late Bakole Issa Sadik, as they received UGX 30 million in compensation under the Ugandan Migrant Workers Insurance Scheme (UMWIS), following a claim made on the insurance cover taken by the late.

Present to receive the compensation on behalf of the family were Bakit Sadit, the late's brother, and Nasur Hassan, his uncle.

Speaking at the handover, NIC Insurance's Chief Operations and Business Development Officer, Ivan Juuko, highlighted the importance of preparing for the uncertainties that migrant workers may face while living and working away from home. He emphasized that UMWIS was established to provide a financial safety net, ensuring that migrant workers and, importantly, their families have support when unexpected events such as illness, disability, loss of employment, contract termination or death occur.

The Managing Director of SPADES Insurance Brokers Ltd, Mr.
Christopher Ssengendo, spoke about the critical role insurance plays in protecting migrant workers throughout their journey. He emphasized the need for migrant workers to understand the value of securing adequate protection before travelling, noting that the consequences of an unexpected event often extend beyond the individual to the families who depend on them.

In his remarks, NIC Life Managing Director, Mr. Lubandi Anthony Whyse Joseph, reflected on the importance of insurance in providing financial support during moments of loss and uncertainty. He noted that while no amount of compensation can replace a loved one, having a financial safety net in place can help ease the burden on families and give them the support they need to face an uncertain future.

Today was therefore more than a compensation handover. It was a reminder that insurance is not simply about a policy or a premium. It is about preparing for the “what if?” moments we hope will never come.

Because when the unexpected happens far from home, the people you love should not be left to face the future alone. Protect yourself before you travel. Protect those you love.

Protect yourself before you travel. Because your future deserves more than hope. It deserves protection.
