Rumi is trying to say that letting go of what no longer serves you is not a sign of loss, but a natural, necessary part of staying alive and healthy. A tree doesn’t panic, grieve, or fight to hold onto its leaves when autumn arrives. It doesn’t cling to them out of nostalgia or fear of looking bare. It understands an ancient, rhythmic truth: those leaves have completed their life cycle, and keeping them attached would only drain vital energy from its core during the cold season ahead.

Rumi uses this powerful image to show us how to navigate our own life transitions. “Dead leaves” represent the old chapters—outgrown habits, expired relationships, past mistakes, or former versions of yourself that no longer fit who you are becoming. Trying to force life back into something that has already withered only exhausts your spirit. Rumi is reminding you that by gracefully letting the dead weight drop, you aren’t ending your story; you are protecting your inner vitality, conserving your energy, and creating the necessary space to bloom again when spring arrives.
