NSLS empowers Popondetta block holders to save for farm upgrades and long-term family wealth.

The arrival of the Nambawan Savings and Loan Society (NSLS) is bringing fresh hope to local oil palm growers, offering a vital financial lifeline for families navigating the unique hardships of the Land Settlement Scheme (LSS).

For second-generation LSS block holders like Leslie Egama, who is of mixed Kimbe and Popondetta parentage, the introduction of formal savings represents a turning point for rural communities.

Growing up, Leslie saw firsthand how the lack of structured financial tools directly restricted his family's potential.

"My parents were block holders, but they were never introduced to the idea of formal savings," Egama shared. "Because we did not save, they struggled to support me financially, and I could not complete my education."

Leslie explains that under the LSS system, families face a critical crisis when their crops age.
"Our biggest challenge is that oil palm trees eventually reach maturity and dry up," Egama said. "When that happens, we have to start from scratch. In the past, growers had to ask friends and family for financial help just to get by."

To rebuild, farmers need immediate cash to purchase new seedlings, specialized tools, and expensive fertilizers. NSLS solves this problem by providing accessible General Savings Accounts that act as an emergency cushion.

"NSLS is the perfect scheme to help us manage our money for daily farming and personal needs," Egama explained. "By keeping money aside as a safety net, we will always have the funds to restart our farms if a disaster hits our trees."

Beyond crop rehabilitation, NSLS empowers ambitious growers to expand their wealth. From his family block in Egora, Leslie is already using his new savings account to change his children's future.

"I inherited one block from my father, but I want to secure a second block of my own," Egama said.

"By starting my savings today, I am securing land that will provide a lifetime benefit for my children."

OPIC officer Elias Lamasisi urges Popondetta oil palm growers to secure their families' futures by opening NSLS savings accounts for their everyday needs.

POPONDETTA — Financial security for oil palm growers is taking a major step forward as Nambawan Savings and Loan Society (NSLS) rolls out tailored financial services across Oro Province.

For 12 years, Oil Palm Industry Corporation (OPIC) Extension Officer Elias Lamasisi has traveled Popondetta advising block holders on crop management. Now, his focus is expanding from farming to financial literacy.

"Growing a healthy crop is only half the battle; the other half is managing harvest money," Lamasisi said. "Fresh fruit bunch payouts fluctuate with global markets. Growers must become responsible savers to survive low-harvest periods."

Lamasisi notes that saving is crucial for Land Settlement Scheme (LSS) families living on fixed six-hectare blocks. With growing populations and limited land, dividing blocks is impossible.

"LSS families must save to create spinoff businesses like trade stores, poultry, or piggery projects," Lamasisi explained. "Savings give families options outside of farming."

While many growers use Nambawan Super for retirement, NSLS now provides simplified products to manage day-to-day needs, like buying fertilizers, replacing tools, and paying school fees.

"Nambawan Super is for long-term retirement, but NSLS complements this by looking after our short-term, daily household and farm needs," Lamasisi stated.

Practicing what he preaches, Lamasisi recently opened his own NSLS savings account to fund a permanent house, launch a small business, and secure university fees for his only daughter.

"I believe my NSLS savings will safeguard my family's future," Lamasisi added. "Thank you, NSLS, for bringing these simple, vital products directly to our growers."

NSLS urges all Popondetta block holders to follow Lamasisi’s lead, open an account, and build a financial buffer for their children.

From Caddy to Pro, Morgan Anato Set for PNG Open Debut with Major Corporate Backing

Papua New Guinea’s top-ranked golfer, Morgan Anato, has officially turned professional. He will make his professional debut at the 2026 PNG Open with major sponsorship from Nambawan Savings & Loan Society (NSLS).

Anato’s transition marks a historic milestone. He and three other local golfers; Soti Dingo, Brian Taikiri, and Gideon Tikili, are the first Papua New Guineans to turn professional in 17 years. From August 27–30, 2026, these four local professionals will lead the PNG challenge against a field of over 150 elite international golfers.

Anato’s rise to the professional ranks is a story of determination. Originally a rugby league player, he switched to golf 14 years ago and started as a caddy in 2012. The Royal Port Moresby Golf Club quickly recognized his raw talent. Remarkably, within just ten months of taking up the sport, Anato was representing Papua New Guinea internationally.

As an amateur, Anato dominated local golf, winning several major titles:
The 2023 PNG Open Amateur Division
The 2025 East New Britain Open
The 2025 New Britain Open

He also became the first PNG amateur to finish a professional tournament under par. Over the last two years, he regularly beat the odds by making the weekend cut in professional events to compete alongside veteran international players.

NSLS has supported Anato for the past four years as his dedicated brand ambassador. The society has provided ongoing financial backing for his travel, equipment, and tournament fees.

To celebrate his new professional status, NSLS hosted an official uniform and equipment presentation this Friday, August 21, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Royal Papua New Guinea Golf Club.

NSLS Board Chairman John Cholai expressed great pride in Anato's development.

"Morgan shows the determination, resilience, and community spirit that NSLS stands for," Chairman Cholai said.

"We believe that supporting grassroots talent is vital for sports development in Papua New Guinea. We are thrilled to be part of his historic journey and look forward to seeing him inspire the next generation of young local golfers."

NSLS CEO John Solok emphasized that this partnership reflects a long-term corporate vision to build sustainable professional pathways for local athletes.

"Our core vision is to support local talent with consistent backing year after year," CEO Solok stated.

"NSLS is proud to partner with Morgan and help bring a young man from the settlements to the world stage. Turning professional means golf is now Morgan’s full-time career. NSLS is fully committed to supporting him, Soti, Brian, and Gideon as they take this massive leap to challenge international fields. His success is a proud moment for our organization and a model for corporate sponsorship in PNG."
