We need to talk about income protection. 💙
We know. It's not exactly the most exciting subject to talk about.
Nobody likes thinking about becoming ill, being injured or suddenly finding themselves unable to work. It's much easier to think, “That won't happen to me.”
But here's the thing…
We insure our phones. We insure our pets. We insure our cars, holidays, homes and the things inside them.
Yet how many of us have protected the income that actually pays for all of those things?
If your salary stopped tomorrow, your mortgage or rent wouldn't. Neither would your energy bills, food shop, childcare, car payments or the countless other costs that come with everyday life.
And relying on savings isn't always the safety net we think it is. Scottish Widows research found that 22% of people don't have enough savings to cope with a financial emergency.
Then there's sick pay. Employer schemes vary, and Statutory Sick Pay is currently up to £123.25 per week - or 80% of your average weekly earnings if that's lower.
Could you and your family comfortably live on that?
Income protection is designed to provide a regular income if illness or injury leaves you unable to work, subject to the terms of your policy.
This isn't about expecting the worst to happen.
It's about protecting yourself, your family and the life you've worked hard to build if it does.
If you don't know what you'd be entitled to from work, how long your savings would last or what protection would suit your budget, let's have a conversation.
