Have you ever linked diet to sweet itch? 🤔 It’s something many of us focus on from the outside (fly rugs, lotions, management), but what we feed can play a part in supporting skin and coat condition too!

Working with the team at Dengie Horse Feeds, we’ve taken a closer look at how nutrition can help from the inside out:

✔️ Finding a balance is key. Forage alone can lack essential trace minerals like zinc, copper and selenium, all important for skin health
✔️ Protein matters! Nutrients like lysine play a role in maintaining healthy skin and coat
✔️ Consider oils carefully. Omega-3 fatty acids can support skin health, while even small amounts of oil can improve coat condition

It’s not a cure, but it’s another piece of the puzzle when managing sweet itch and keeping your horse comfortable through the season.

With the competition season now in full swing, this is your reminder to complete all the necessary (and legal) checks BEFORE you load up the ramp!

✔️ Book a full annual service and specifically ask for flooring checks (don’t assume it’s been done as standard)
✔️ Make sure your insurance policy and breakdown cover still suit how often you’re travelling this season
✔️ Make sure all MOT, plating (for 3.5t+), road tax and towing vehicle cover are all up to date
✔️ Horse passports MUST travel with your horse, so now’s the time to double-check it’s valid and ready
✔️Complete a final safety sweep on tyres, lights, brakes, and general condition before your first trip out

It’s easy to focus on getting yourself and your horse competition-ready, but your transport setup is just as important for a safe and stress-free season.
