For many women, the menopause arrives at a time when retirement is beginning to feel less like a distant idea and more like something worth planning for.

But women's pension savings can often have been affected by career breaks, periods of part-time work or time spent caring for children or relatives.

World Menopause Day is a useful reminder to take stock of your own financial future.

How are your pensions performing? Do you know what retirement income you could expect? Are there gaps in your National Insurance record? And, importantly, are you on track for the retirement you'd like?

At Bullough Financial Planning, we can help you understand where you stand today and put a plan in place for the years ahead.

Because taking care of your future self includes taking care of your financial wellbeing too.

Have you ever wished you could peek into the future before making an important financial decision?

It’s tempting to imagine that knowing tomorrow’s headlines today would give you an unbeatable advantage – allowing you to avoid market downturns and spot opportunities before everyone else.

But would it?

Researchers at Elm Wealth put this idea to the test. They gave 118 financially trained participants money to invest, with one extraordinary advantage: they were able to see the next day’s Wall Street Journal front page before making their investment decisions.

You might expect them to have made a fortune.

Instead, around half lost money, one in six went bankrupt, and the average participant grew their initial stake by just 3.2%.

It’s a fascinating reminder that information isn’t the same as wisdom – and knowing what happens next doesn’t necessarily mean knowing what to do about it.

Good financial planning isn’t about trying to predict the future. It’s about being prepared for it.

A well-constructed financial plan considers different possibilities and helps you build the flexibility and resilience to deal with changing markets, unexpected events and evolving priorities. It can give you something much more useful than tomorrow’s headlines: greater confidence in the decisions you make today.

At Bullough Financial Planning, we work with our clients to build personalised financial plans around their lives, goals and priorities. We can’t tell you exactly what tomorrow will bring – nobody can – but we can help you put a plan in place designed to keep you on course, whatever the future holds.

• Can I afford to spend more and enjoy my retirement?
• If something happened to me, how would my partner be affected?

Having a clear financial plan can help answer these questions and give you greater confidence about the future.

We work closely with you to understand where you are today, what you want for the future and what matters most to you. Together, we build a personalised financial roadmap designed around your individual goals – whether that's building wealth, supporting your family or planning for a comfortable retirement.

Your investment strategy is an important part of that roadmap.

Is your pension enough to cope with inflation?
£30,000 today won’t necessarily buy you the same lifestyle in 10 or 20 years.
That’s why inflation is such an important consideration when planning retirement.

If your retirement income remains static while everyday costs rise, its purchasing power gradually falls. And with retirement potentially lasting 20, 30 years or longer, even relatively modest inflation can make a significant difference.

The question therefore isn’t simply “Do I have enough to retire?”

It’s also “Will my money continue to provide the lifestyle I want throughout retirement?”

Building inflation into your retirement projections can give you a much more realistic picture of whether your pension savings are likely to last.

How much should I keep in cash during retirement?
Cash can provide valuable security in retirement – but keeping too much of your money in cash can have drawbacks too.

Having an accessible cash reserve can mean you don’t need to sell investments unexpectedly to cover everyday expenses or an emergency.

How much you need will depend on your circumstances, spending and other sources of guaranteed income. Some retirees may feel comfortable holding enough to cover several months of expenditure; others may prefer a larger buffer.
The important thing is finding the right balance between accessibility, security and longer-term growth.

Your retirement money may need to last for decades, so deciding how much to keep in cash should be part of your overall retirement strategy.

What happens to your pension when you die?
It’s not the cheeriest question – but it is an important part of financial planning.
What happens to your pension when you die depends on the type of pension you have, how you’ve chosen to take your retirement benefits and your circumstances when you die.

Some pensions may be passed on to your chosen beneficiaries, while defined benefit pensions may provide an income to a spouse, civil partner or dependant.
It’s also important to keep your pension provider’s beneficiary or expression of wish nomination up to date, particularly after major life changes.

Your pension can form an important part of your wider estate planning, so it’s worth understanding what would happen to it rather than leaving it to chance.

If you’ve worked for several employers over the years, you may have accumulated a collection of different pension pots.

Bringing them together can make your retirement savings easier to manage and give you a clearer picture of how much you’ve built up.

But consolidation isn’t automatically the right answer.

Some older pensions may include valuable guarantees, benefits or favourable terms that could be lost if you transfer them. Charges and investment choices can also vary considerably between schemes.

Before moving anything, it’s important to understand exactly what you have – and what you might be giving up.

You can stop working whenever you choose – but that doesn’t mean your State Pension starts at the same time.

Your State Pension can normally only be claimed once you reach your State Pension age.

If you retire before then, you’ll need another way of funding the gap, perhaps through workplace or private pensions, savings, investments or other income.
Retiring early could also affect your State Pension entitlement if you haven’t built up enough qualifying years on your National Insurance record.

If early retirement is part of your plan, it’s worth checking both your State Pension forecast and how you’ll fund those years before it becomes payable.

Can I take my pension and still work?
Yes – in many cases, you can access a private pension and continue working.
For some people, this creates the opportunity for a gradual transition into retirement: perhaps reducing their hours while using pension income to make up some of the difference.

However, accessing your pension while continuing to contribute to one can have tax implications and may affect how much you can contribute tax-efficiently in future.

So while retirement doesn’t necessarily have to mean stopping work altogether, it’s worth looking at the wider financial picture before accessing your pension.
A little planning now can give you much more flexibility later.
