I know this post probably won’t get as many likes or shares as a video of a big bluefin tuna smashing a lure… but please prove me wrong.
Safety posts can sometimes be seen as the boring stuff, but this could genuinely make a difference to someone who spends time out on the water.
We’ve just added another level of safety to Squid Rib, fitting Smart Alert water-activated AIS & DSC Man Overboard devices to our Mustang Survival lifejackets, alongside the line cutters we already carry on each lifejacket.
The Smart Alert units were incredibly easy to set up through the app and link with our VHF radio. If someone enters the water, the device automatically activates and sends out an AIS/DSC distress alert, helping identify the casualty and their position.
The line cutters are equally important. When you’re fishing around heavy lines, leaders and trolling gear, having something immediately accessible to cut yourself or another crew member free could be vital.
We hope we’ll never need to use any of it, but when we head offshore, we want to give ourselves and our crew every possible chance if something goes wrong.
So instead of just scrolling past this one, please give it a share.
Share it with your fishing mates, boating friends or anyone who spends time on the water. If it makes just one person look at their own safety equipment and add something that could one day save a life, then it’s been worth posting.
Catching the fish is the exciting part. Getting everyone home safely is the important part.
