Something I’ve learned working in the equine industry is that being good at what you do takes genuine passion and dedication. 🤍

I try to always be available, reply quickly and bend over backwards to accommodate my clients. But constantly giving so much of yourself can be mentally exhausting.

A conversation with a friend in the industry today reminded me that it’s okay to say no, set boundaries and make time for myself.

You can’t pour from an empty cup. 🫶🏼

Taking care of myself means I can continue giving my clients and their horses the level of care they deserve.

A little reminder that putting yourself first sometimes isn’t selfish…

”Behavior is communication” - Becks Nairn

(English further down)

”Behavior is communication” - Becks Nairn

Ever since Robert started vet school in 1999, I’ve wanted to attend a horse dissection.

To be able to better understand the anatomy, the qualities of the different structures, see the difference between what is healthy and what is unhealthy tissue etc. Things I have seen in humans in my profession as a physical therapist, especially in surgeries.

27 years later it finally happened!

I´ve been following Becks Nairn on FB and Patreon for some years now. Robert and I have been both fascinated and horrified by what we have seen in her findings in the horses she dissects. There is just so much we don’t know that a horse is enduring in silence, due to it being a prey- and flight animal whose survival depends on not showing any signs of being a weaker individual to any predators.

A group of about 30(ish) professionals (vets, osteopaths, body workers, saddle fitters/makers, podiatrists etc) got to spend 2 days at the beautiful equine rehab center Haras di Saragua outside Divonne-les-Bains in France, attending the clinic with Becks, organized by Equi-Ed.

A 26 years old PRE had earlier in the morning been respectfully euthanized after Becks had had some time with him and his owner. He was retired from riding 9 years ago due to arthrosis and had now gotten worse.

Becks went through his entire body in a very professional and empathetic way, out of respect for both the horse and the owner who so bravely attended most of the clinic. Her presence made it possible for us to ask questions that arose during the dissection. We were all so very grateful for that.

I think this was the 176th horse Becks dissected so she has quite some experience to draw on. I was so impressed by her devotion, knowledge and skills with the scalpel (!) and the way she was presenting everything with both integrity and humility regarding what we still don’t know yet for sure. She encouraged us to get a feel for the different structures (both before and after rigor mortis) and to really be a part of it. It was such a great learning opportunity.

It was simultaneously quite emotional when we got to talk to the owner of the horse, see photos and just share this moment with her. But there was something beautiful in being able to combine science and heart in this way - which Becks guided us so well in by her own way of being in this situation. We were all so very grateful for this generous and brave owner sharing her horse with us so that we could learn and hopefully help other horses in the future. Unforgettable in so many ways.

Thank you Becks for everything you do - for the good of the horse and for us humans to learn to be of better use for horses❤️🐴 Pernilla

(If you want to contribute to the welfare of horses, please follow her on Patreon where you can see a lot of her work in collecting data for research. You will learn tons while watching it!)

Highly recommend attending this event!
