Reducing costs can improve profitability, but that doesn’t have to mean stripping the business back to the bare bones.

A much better place to start is with waste.

Take subscriptions, for example.

How many software packages, apps, memberships or other services are quietly leaving your bank account each month?

Are you still using all of them?

Do they still provide enough value to justify what you’re paying?

Suppliers are another area worth reviewing. Prices can gradually creep upwards, and the deal that made sense two years ago might not be particularly competitive today.

Ask whether you’re paying for a level of service you actually need and whether another supplier could offer better value.

The same principle applies to wasted time and effort. Inefficient processes and unnecessary tasks have a cost too, even when they don’t appear as a separate line on your accounts.

Improving profit doesn’t necessarily require a dramatic overhaul of your business.

Getting more of the right customers, selling more to existing customers, reviewing your pricing and reducing waste can all make a difference.

Pick one area, concentrate on it and see what changes over the next 12 months.

Putting prices up can feel risky.

What if customers complain? What if they leave? What if they go somewhere cheaper?

But there’s another question worth asking:

What happens when you keep doing work that simply isn’t profitable?

Look at the customers or projects where:

🔹Work regularly overruns
🔹Complaints or rework are common
🔹Extra requests keep creeping into the original scope
🔹The amount of time involved simply isn’t reflected in what you charge

Increasing your prices on this work could make it profitable again.

And if a customer decides not to accept the new price? Losing unprofitable work may have very little impact on your overall profit, while freeing up valuable time for better-paying work.

It’s also worth reviewing how you handle discounts and extras.

A discount that everybody receives isn’t really a discount. It’s your actual price.

And additional meetings, urgent requests and variations from the agreed work all take time. Make sure your pricing reflects that.

The goal isn’t simply to charge more: it’s to make sure the work you’re doing is genuinely worthwhile for the business.
