More vintage stuff today, an old HMV that sounded weak and tinny when playing a record, both coils in the cartridge were open circuit. Not easy to find something of the right vintage so a more modern (ceramic) cartridge was fitted after a slight modification to the mounting points.

And another turntable! A 1970’s Yamaha with a damaged motor. I was able to get a damaged deck with a good motor from eBay, what a stroke of luck that was! The two motors were identical except the body of the replacement was deeper, meaning the bottom wouldn’t go back on…so a bit of woodwork was needed, it worked out quite well in the end.

I finished up the Dynatron this morning. It had been completely messed up by a previous attempt at repair. I stripped down the spindle assembly to get at the bearing, I replaced that as well as removing all the old and hardened grease. The plastic sub platter had to sit at the correct height on the spindle so I had to work out which pads and washers were supposed to be there. With that done I replaced the incorrect flat belt with the correct triangular section one. Then there was the rubber mat missing from the top of the sub platter, I made one from an old turntable mat. Now the top circlip could be put in the right position…underneath the mat rather than on top of it where the previous repairer had placed it, thereby clamping the whole thing down tight and scratching the nice metal disc in the centre of the mat…about the only thing I couldn’t put right.
Now playing nicely in the corner of my workshop, another vintage piece ready to provide pleasure for many more years.

Is it just me or do all these high end amps look like they’ve been built in someone’s shed?
Michell Argo preamp with a noisy volume control. Normally I’d strip it down and give the contacts a good clean but there was no way into this one without the risk of destroying it. I wasn’t sure that was the problem anyway, it was more of an intermittent brushing noise, rather than a crackle when the control was turned. I noticed a piece of wire pulled tight around the metal part of the control, it certainly wasn’t there to hold the control in so it had to be earthing, both the wire and the control’s casing were quite tarnished so a clean up of the casing and a new piece of wire had it working perfectly.
Playing through my Quad power amp it’s probably the best sounding piece of kit I’ve had through the workshop!

This is the power supply and motor drive panel from a Pink Triangle Turntable, a very expensive and well respected piece of Hi-Fi...why then use a circuit that looks like it's been built in a school science lab! All the small electrolytic caps were open circuit, most of the large ones were way off value, I changed the six high wattage resistors because they had had a very hard life, the print on the back of the panel breaks if you breath on it, it's that pathetic, all that work done and the motor spins now but not as it should, it has very low torque and seems unsure of which direction it should turn, there are more faulty components that need to found and replaced but now wondering if the motor is also toast!
A DC motor conversion is available but at ÂŁ400 it seems a little OTT. I'll keep going to try and keep it all original.
Oh yeah...as usual no circuit diagram is supplied by the manufacturer!

A JVC Turntable in for a stylus and a service, the stylus was the easy bit as I soon discovered the auto return mechanism wasn't working. I found the brass arm in the photo was slightly bent and kept slipping out of it's track in the cam gear above it, I straightened it out but also had to adjust the height of the gear. I also had to modify the felt pad at the other end of the brass arm as most of it was worn away and wasn't returning the arm to its resting position smoothly or completely.
All working a treat now.

I’m working on this nice old Dynatron from 1973, the turntable platter wouldn’t turn as the spindle bearing was seized solid. It had been somewhere else and apparently they didn’t realise the spindle should turn and so had tried to modify it!
Under the main platter is a smaller plastic one that sits tightly on the spindle which is slightly tapered, it takes its drive from the motor via a small belt. Underneath the small platter I found a thin plastic washer and a felt pad, they were supposed to be there but there was also a rubber O ring and a plastic domed washer, they were definitely not supposed to be there and had been added to move the platter up the spindle to a place it could rotate freely, now they had the problem of the main platter sitting too high on the spindle and so removed the felt or rubber (not sure which) pad from the top of the small platter.
So I spent a good hour stripping the spindle housing to reach the bearing, it was full of hard grease and the ball bearing was pitted, so I now have one of those on order, then I’ll need to make a new pad for the top of the small platter…oh and the triangular drive belt had been replaced with a flat one so I have one of those on order as well.
It’ll be lovely when it’s finished!

Wartime civilian receiver now up and running, I had to replace every capacitor in there, also the first IF valve was replaced. No amount of switch cleaner would have revived the volume control so it had to come to pieces to have its contacts polished. It’s taken a while and I’ve had to fit it in whenever I’ve had a few minutes, not that that happens very often 🙄
