Not earning? You can still be building a pension.

In episode 5 of our Summer Reset I shared one of the most underused rules there is. A non-earner can have £2,880 a year paid into their pension, and tax relief automatically tops it up to £3,600. That's free money from the government for someone on maternity leave, taking a career break or caring for family.

If one of you has stepped back from work, this is one of the simplest ways a couple can keep both futures growing, not just one.

The maintenance stops when they turn 18. The mortgage doesn't.

Katie raised this in episode 5 of our Summer Reset and it's a cliff edge so many mums don't see coming. That money was never pocket money, it was keeping a roof over heads and food on the table. And at 18, unless your child is still in education, it generally ends, whether or not they're anywhere near standing on their own feet.

If that date is in your future, plan for it now, not the month it happens.

Episode 5 of our Summer Reset is about the life events that shape women's wealth. Career breaks, motherhood, divorce, caregiving, bereavement, menopause. They're rarely in the plan, and they're often the very things that make the biggest financial dent.

Life is never very linear. Your financial plan has to bend with it. Episode 5 is out today.

He was the main breadwinner. He walked out on the Friday.

By Monday she was sitting looking at the bank accounts thinking, what do I actually do now?

That happened to a client. In episode 5 of our Summer Reset, Katie, Carol and I talk about the life events nobody plans for. Divorce. Career breaks. Caring for parents. Losing someone.

There are things you can do before any of it happens, and one of them takes about ten minutes.

Tomorrow. Life events, and how to plan for them.

The new episode of Accelerating Your Wealth drops tomorrow.

Katie was paying for 3 Netflix screens. When do she, her husband and her son ever sit and watch three different things at once?

In episode 4 of our Summer Reset, Carol set a challenge: go through your bank and credit card statements for the last 3 months with a highlighter. The subscriptions are where it gets uncomfortable. Netflix, Disney, Prime, Apple, all running at once, quietly draining the account every month.

You don't have to cancel everything. Rotate them. Keep one, pause the rest, swap next month. Small leaks sink big ships.

£1 per dojo point. That's the deal with my son.

He earns points at school, I pay him, and the money is his. Last week he asked for dumplings after school, those squishy toys he's obsessed with. Yes, I said, you're buying them with your own money. His face completely changed. Suddenly he wasn't sure he wanted them.

I shared this in episode 4 of our Summer Reset because we're all the same. When spending is connected to something real, our choices change on their own. If your spending feels automatic, that's the bit to fix first.

My son is obsessed with these squishy dumpling toys. They're £4 to £6 each, and until recently they appeared as if by magic whenever we passed a shop!

So we made a deal. Every dojo point he earns at school is worth a pound. Last week he got to the car with £9 to his name and asked if we could go and buy dumplings. Yes, I said, and you're spending your own money. His face changed instantly. Suddenly the dumplings had a cost.

As adults we are no different! When spending has no connection to anything, we just keep spending. The moment money has a value attached, a goal, a trade-off, something real, our behaviour changes on its own.

That's what this episode is about: turning income into long-term wealth. Carol set the challenge of going through 3 months of bank statements with a highlighter!

We talked about the bigger picture. The people who got wealthier these past 20 years are the people who own assets. The system markets to the rest of us relentlessly, buy this, upgrade that, bigger house, bigger car. Stepping back from that and spending in line with your actual goals is the shift from striving to thriving.

My son is obsessed with these squishy dumpling toys. Four to six quid each, and they used to just appear whenever we passed a shop.

Then we made a deal.

Last week he got to the car with £9 in his pocket and asked to go and buy one. I said yes, with your own money. His whole face changed.

In episode 4 of our Summer Reset, Katie, Carol and I get into where the money actually goes, and why we adults are no different to a 9-year-old with £9. There's a highlighter exercise in this one that most people find uncomfortable.

Tomorrow. From striving to thriving.

What would it cost to replace everything the default parent does?

The school runs, the laundry, the shopping, the packed lunches, being the one who knows where everything is and when everything happens. Estimates put the replacement value at anywhere from £40,000 to £70,000 a year, and it keeps rising with the cost of living.

We talked about this in episode 3 of our Summer Reset because it's why protection matters for both partners, not just the breadwinner. If the person running the household couldn't, the money would have to come from somewhere.
