It's the ten-digit number HMRC gives you when you register for Self Assessment, and you can't file without it. First time registering? It can take 4 to 6 weeks, though we chase HMRC to speed that up. Already registered before? We can usually get you set up on our system in about a week.

Would you actually know if you needed to register for Self Assessment?

It's not just the obvious stuff. Property income, sponsorship, coaching on the side - if it's under Β£1,000 total you're covered by the trading allowance. Above that, you need to register.

Interest income catches people out too, the threshold depends on what rate of tax you're on, and if you're earning over Β£50k and paying into a workplace pension, there could be extra relief sitting there nobody's claimed.

Even your own boots count. Spend Β£1,000 on kit as an additional rate taxpayer and that's a genuine Β£450 back.

If you're not sure whether any of this applies, that's worth a conversation.
