Waiting for your VAT number? Your VAT registration effective date still matters.

You may have VAT obligations from your effective registration date, even if HMRC has not yet issued your VAT number.

While you wait:
• Keep detailed records of all sales and purchases.
• Do not show VAT separately on invoices before the effective date unless you have received proper advice.
• Once your VAT number arrives, review any affected invoices and correct or reissue them if needed.

The correct treatment depends on your registration circumstances, so get advice promptly to avoid costly mistakes.

Question 3: What VAT schemes are available?

The right VAT scheme can affect your cash flow and the amount of administration your business requires. The main options are:

• Standard VAT: account for VAT on sales and purchases in each VAT return period.
• Cash Accounting: account for VAT when customers pay you and when you pay suppliers. Usually available where taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less.
• Annual Accounting: submit one VAT return each year, usually with payments on account. Usually available where taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less.
• Flat Rate Scheme: pay a fixed percentage of gross turnover. Usually available where taxable turnover is £150,000 or less, subject to eligibility rules.

The most suitable option depends on your turnover, costs, customers and cash flow. The schemes have specific conditions, so professional advice can help you choose correctly.

Can your business register for VAT even if turnover is below the compulsory registration threshold?

Yes, voluntary VAT registration may be possible. It could allow you to reclaim VAT on eligible business purchases and may make your business more suitable to work with VAT-registered customers.

However, registration also means charging VAT where applicable, keeping accurate records and submitting VAT Returns. It is not automatically beneficial; the right choice depends on your customers, costs and circumstances.

Could your business need to register for VAT?

Compulsory VAT registration may be required if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. You may also need to register if you expect your taxable turnover to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days.

Remember: taxable turnover is not simply all money entering your business. It generally relates to sales of goods and services that count towards the VAT threshold.

Voluntary VAT registration may also be possible if your taxable turnover is below £90,000, depending on your circumstances.

VAT rules depend on the individual business and should be checked before acting.

¿Estás reclamando correctamente los gastos de tu sociedad limitada?

Algunos gastos empresariales pueden ser deducibles a efectos del Impuesto sobre Sociedades cuando cumplen las normas aplicables, como:

• Gastos de oficina y suministros
• Software empresarial y suscripciones profesionales

Selling a business, property or another valuable asset? You may need to consider Capital Gains Tax (CGT). ⚠️

CGT can apply when you sell or dispose of an asset that has increased in value. The tax is generally based on the gain you make: not the total sale price.

For owner-managed businesses, this could involve:
• Selling shares in your company
• Selling business premises or investment property
• Disposing of valuable business assets
• Transferring an asset to someone else

Allowable costs, losses and available reliefs may affect the amount due, so planning ahead is important. Before agreeing a sale or transfer, get professional advice to understand the potential tax position and reporting requirements.

Still keeping your business records in spreadsheets, folders or a shoebox? Now is the time to go digital.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax means eligible sole traders must:

• Keep digital records of income and expenses
• Use compatible software
• Send quarterly updates to HMRC
• Complete an annual tax return as usual

If your qualifying income was over £50,000 in 2024/25, MTD for Income Tax applies from 6 April 2026. The first quarterly update deadline is 7 August 2026.

These quarterly updates are not four extra tax returns. They are regular summaries of your digital records, helping you stay organised and avoid the year-end panic of finding missing receipts and working out months of transactions at once.

Starting early gives you time to choose the right software, build good habits and get support before deadlines become stressful.

Not sure when MTD applies to you? KKB Accounting Ltd can help you understand the changes and prepare with confidence.

Call 0116 373 0228 or WhatsApp 07926 470457.
