Your pension falls just after you retire. Then markets recover.
Does that mean your pension recovers too? 🤔
Not necessarily — especially when you’re taking money out each month.
In my latest video, we meet Paul, a hypothetical retiree with £1 million invested in his pension and a separate cash reserve.
Using historical market movements from the Covid crash, I compare what happened when he:
➡️ Kept taking income from his investments.
➡️ Used some of his cash reserve temporarily instead.
It’s a clear demonstration of why selling investments after a fall can affect your retirement beyond the downturn itself.
But there’s a catch in the comparison — and holding cash comes with costs and limitations too.
If you’re approaching retirement or already drawing from your pension, this will help you understand an important risk.

Where would your retirement income come from if markets fell tomorrow?
For general information, not personal financial advice. Investments can fall as well as rise, and past performance is not a reliable guide to future results.
