Access to business finance remains one of the biggest challenges for UK businesses in 2026 – not because funding doesn’t exist, but because most business owners don’t know what’s actually available to them.

When cashflow tightens or a growth opportunity appears, the instinct is to call the bank. The same bank you’ve been with for fifteen years. The one that holds your business current account and knows your turnover. Seems logical. Often it’s the worst place to start.

Another short working week, this week, but there has been no shortage of activity…

We’ve managed to get a couple of client completions over the line 🎉 – always a good feeling, especially when the calendar’s been chopped in half by half term and bank holiday leftovers. Momentum has been maintained though.

On the networking front, it was great to see TRUST Networking hand over a cheque to The Jordan Legacy. Andy was otherwise occupied (half term duties calling), but it was nice to play a small part and contribute to such a worthwhile cause.

Meanwhile, Steve continues to stay very much on brand by… not leaving Sheffield… or did he? At this point, we’re starting to think he might need a passport for anything beyond Meadowhall. That said, he did go above and beyond this week and did help a fellow B2B member for local charity, Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and their summer party which was held at the New York Stadium in Rotherham. The charity’s Nina Rose persuaded Steve to be their rather large fox mascot.

With the weather doing its best impression of the Med, we can confirm that wearing a full fox suit in the heat is not an experience Steve is in a rush to repeat. All for a brilliant cause though – and fair play to him! It was nice to see fellow B2B members Dan Willers and Margaret Wood there too.

All in all, a short but productive week – deals done, good causes supported, and only mild heat-related mascot trauma reported.

Have a great weekend all 👍

What a Week!!

Andy started the week with a round of golf organised by Dave Young with Andy Horsfield and Anna Pickup – Andy was on Anna's team and unfortunately lost the matchplay in a tight match. In what was another day of four seasons in a few hours friendships were cemented and deals discussed.

Tuesday to Thursday was UKREiiF. Steven made it to Leeds three days running, which tells you the quality of conversations happening. Andy and Steve caught up with Piragash, Steve's old colleague who's now running Lumora Capital – always good to see people you've known for years doing well in their own ventures an even better when they put on an excellent drinks event!

Wednesday on was the YBS drinks event. Barry Dillon and Michelle Lowe hosted a solid room full of lenders and contacts. Those events are worth their weight – you learn more about what's actually happening in the market in two hours than you do reading updates for a month.

On Thursday morning at TRUST Networking , James Naylor updated us on Alfie's Legacy, Remembering Alfie Naylor - Fund Raising for CRY, raising funds on behalf of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). Trust Networking has given £2,500 to screen young adults for undiagnosed heart conditions. This puts the week's deals and conversations into perspective.

We are back in the office today catching up on everything. Rest assured, Steve's recovering in Sheffield.

Have a good long weekend!

Most businesses worry about taking on work they can’t afford to fund.

Fewer think about what it costs to turn it down.

Not just the immediate revenue. The relationship. The repeat business. The competitor who takes it instead. And the slow realisation that you’re not growing because you’re cautious – you’re stuck because you can’t afford the risk.

Six months ago, a fish supplier in Grimsby faced exactly that decision. Large contract. Good customer. The kind of order that moves the business forward.

And a nagging question: what if they don’t pay? 👉 Take a look at our recent blog 'The Real Cost of Saying No: Why Turning Down Work Costs More Than You Think' and find out more: https://bit.ly/4wsBxH7

In between dodging some very questionable weather, it’s been a week of networking, golf and some properly good meetings...

Andy had the pleasure of a round at Brough Golf Club with Darren Peacock and Gareth Fawke of Westwood Capital Finance. We managed to get hailstones, sunshine and rain all in the same round - which takes some doing. Safe to say the highlight wasn’t the golf… but the ever-cheerful cake lady at the halfway house, who, remarkably, had a healthy stock of Prosecco for that time of the morning.

Thursday morning was a cracking breakfast hosted by Adam Wolstenholme at Bridging Finance Solutions. It was a really good opportunity to spend some proper time with Adam, Andy and Lee, away from the usual quick chats, and just get stuck into what they’re doing at BFS. Plenty of open conversation about the market, where things are heading, and where the opportunities actually are (not just the theory).

What stood out most was how easy the whole thing was - no hard sell, just good people who know their space, are honest about it, and are clearly focused on building solid, long-term relationships. Exactly the kind of people you want to be doing business with.

Steve, unsurprisingly, wasn’t there - his reluctance to leave Sheffield is well documented at this point and got a mention more than once. His recent Pétanque success also made an appearance in the conversation, so he’s continuing to build his reputation… just not geographically.

All in all, a week of good people, good conversations and plenty of laughs.

🧡Yesterday, we were proud to present Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity with a cheque for £2,500 - and it was a moment that reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

Earlier this year, Fiona Harris from the charity joined us for our 10-minute presentation slot and gave our members a truly powerful insight into the vital work they carry out every day across Yorkshire - from peer support groups and wellbeing walks to hardship grants for families in desperate need.

The statistics alone stopped us in our tracks. Every week, 15 people across Yorkshire receive the life-changing news that they have a brain tumour. Yet brain tumours receive less than 2% of the annual cancer research spend in the UK. That's why the work Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity does matters so much.

💬 Fiona said: “Every week, 15 people across Yorkshire are told they have a brain tumour diagnosis- bringing not only physical challenges, but also emotional and financial difficulties for patients, as well as their friends, families, and loved ones.

"We are incredibly grateful to the caring corporate community and generous businesspeople at TRUST for their donation, which will help improve the lives of anyone impacted by a brain tumour diagnosis across Yorkshire. Their support enables us to continue being a hand in the dark for our families, delivering timely and meaningful support where it is needed most."

This is what TRUST Networking is all about - local businesses supporting each other so we can give something back to our community. Every penny of our membership fees that isn't spent on essential running costs goes straight to causes like this one.

Thank you to every one of our members for making this possible🙌 (Warren Coates - Wey Aye Marketing // Tony Mellor - Apollo Cloud // Lee Kellett - Class Office Ltd // Garrey Haase - Yorkshire Eyewear // Rachel Hobson - Black Door Social // Neil Greer/Cutting Edge Digital // Zoe Ziegler - Ziegler Financial // Andy Bissett - Shadowfax Funding Solutions // Thomas Bond - Thomas Coombs // Richard Ashton - Ashtons Automotive // Jon Kent - Butler Ridge Group // Philip Williams - Boston Spa Legal // Sam Bull - ABIS // Andrew Parkinson - Charles Walker Construction // Alan Burkitt - Rowland Burkitt // Ross Pellatt - Wilkins Chimney Sweep Yorkshire // Adam Tomlinson - ADM Car Buying Ltd // Russ Pickett - Companion // Frances Lawrence - Wrixle

Most business owners think invoice finance is an all-or-nothing decision. Either you’re desperate enough to commit your entire sales ledger to a 12-month facility, or you wait it out and hope the bank balance holds.

After two decades in commercial banking, you start noticing something: that’s not actually the problem most businesses have...

This week may have been a short one… but it certainly didn’t slow things down.

Deals have continued to flow in, with a few now progressing into the legal stage – always a good sign of momentum building.

Late last week, Andy enjoyed a round of golf with Dave Young from Parker Young Recruitment Ltd. Not only great company, but Dave also offered some much-needed coaching tips…⛳Westwood Capital Finance – you’ve been warned for next week!

At TRUST Networking this week, it was fascinating to hear how Alan Burkitt of Rowland Burkitt Chartered Surveyors is embracing AI – but with a sensible, measured approach. A great reminder that technology works best when paired with experience.

Meanwhile at B2B, Gareth Day of Day To Day Business Services Limited delivered a brilliant breakdown of the differences between sole traders and limited companies – and the potential pitfalls of each. Practical insights like that always hit home.

Next stop: Harrogate Business Lunch, where Andy is attending as a guest of Jamie Hunt from TFG Capital Limited. If you’ve never been, it’s basically LinkedIn brought to life - and Andy is looking forward to catching plenty of familiar faces there.

Have a great weekend when it comes.
