Be honest…where are your receipts?

Neatly filed? Uploaded to your software?

Orrrrr…currently living in a drawer, handbag, van dashboard, or random pile on the kitchen table?

We’ve seen them all.

The thing about bookkeeping is that it’s much easier (and cheaper!) to keep on top of things as you go, rather than trying to piece everything together months later.

A few minutes each week can save hours of stress at year end.

No judgement here though. We’ve all got that one drawer…👀

‘Just a wee reminder to send over your bank statements.’

Followed by:

‘Just checking if you’ve had a chance to send those bank statements.’

And then:

‘Sorry to chase again…’

Thankfully, we’re making life a bit easier with our new Engager client portal.

Instead of digging through emails or wondering where that attachment ended up, you can upload documents securely in one place whenever they’re needed.

Less chasing, less admin, and a much smoother process for everyone involved.

Have you moved house recently?

One thing that’s easy to forget when your address changes is updating your accountant or bookkeeper.

It’s not just for contact purposes either - we need to make sure the information we hold is accurate and up to date for things like AML checks and HMRC records.

Keeping your details current helps avoid unnecessary delays, extra admin, and important correspondence ending up in the wrong place.

If any of your details have changed recently, just send us a message and we’ll get everything updated 😊

2026 MILEAGE RATE UPDATE 🚙

From April 2026 the approved mileage rate for cars and vans has increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.

This is a welcome update for business owners and employees using their own vehicles for work, helping better reflect the rising costs of fuel and motoring expenses.

If you claim mileage through your business, make sure your records and systems are updated for the new tax year!

A wee update from us (and Skye 🐾)

After an unexpected and stressful last week, Emma is now fully back at her desk and working through catching up on everything.

Thankfully Skye is back home and recovering well, although she’s currently enjoying four weeks of strict crate rest…which she’s obviously thrilled about.

We really appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding and kind messages over the past week. It’s meant a lot.

Now back to emails, accounts, and trying to stop Skye plotting her escape from prison.

A business bank account doesn’t have to mean expensive fees!

There are plenty of free or low-cost options available for small businesses and sole traders, including Monzo, Starling, Mettle and Tide.

Many also connect directly with bookkeeping software, helping keep your finances organised from day one.

If you’re still using your personal account for business transactions, now might be the time to make the switch.

Some of you might have noticed we’ve got an unexpected Out of Office message switched on…

Emma is currently away at Livingston Vet Hospital with the lovely Skye, who’s undergoing some health investigations.

We’re hoping Emma will be back at her desk by Thursday morning, but we really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during what’s been a very unexpected and stressful few days.

Safe to say Skye is still enjoying the attention in the meantime 🐾

One of the simplest ways to make bookkeeping easier? Keep your business and personal finances separate 👏

Using a dedicated business bank account helps you:

• Clearly track income and expenses
• Save time when it comes to bookkeeping and tax returns
• Avoid confusion and missed transactions
• Look more professional to clients and suppliers
• Understand how your business is actually performing

Mixing personal and business spending can quickly become messy, especially at year end or tax time…

Setting up a separate account is a wee step that can make a huge difference as your business grows.

One thing we love about running Balance & Thrive is growing alongside our clients.

Now that we hold our Practice Licence, we’re able to support micro and small businesses with:

• Year end accounts
• Corporation tax returns
• Bookkeeping support

For our clients, it means more can now be handled in one place — making things simpler, more efficient, and less stressful.

We know how much small business owners already juggle, so being able to offer a more complete support package is something we’re really proud of.

If you’re looking for friendly, professional support with your finances, our inbox is always open ✨
