A quick reminder for employers with a PAYE Settlement Agreement in place: the payment deadline is coming up.

For the 2025/26 tax year, payments are due by 19 October if paying by post or 22 October if paying electronically.

It is worth checking now that your figures are ready, the payment method is clear and the correct reference will be used, rather than leaving everything until the last minute.

April 2027 might not feel close yet, but there is plenty employers can do now to make the move to mandatory payrolling of Benefits in Kind much smoother.

A good starting point is to look at the information you already hold. Are benefit records clear and up to date? Is it obvious who provides that information to payroll? Are your current processes and payroll software ready for real-time reporting?

HMRC has now published the 2027–28 RTI data requirements, so businesses have a better idea of what will need to be reported through payroll when the changes come in. (cipp.org.uk)

The earlier these details are checked, the easier it will be to spot anything that needs attention before April.

October has arrived, and with it comes the first of the latest Employment Rights Act changes.

From today, the usual time limit for bringing most Employment Tribunal claims increases from three months to six months. There are more employment changes due later in October and further reforms still to come, so employers will want to keep an eye on what applies to their business.

It does not mean everything needs to change overnight, but it is a useful reminder to keep policies, processes and employee information under review as the new rules begin to take effect.

A little awareness now can make future changes much easier to manage.

Holiday pay can still feel more complicated than it should, especially when working hours or patterns vary.

The CIPP has recently published its response to the holiday pay compliance and enforcement consultation, with a strong focus on practical guidance and helping employers deal with mistakes in a sensible way.

For businesses, clear records and regular checks are really important. If you can easily see what leave has been taken, how holiday pay has been worked out and where any changes were made, it becomes much easier to manage questions and put things right if needed.

Holiday pay does not always have to be complicated, but the detail does need to be clear.

October is getting closer, and apparently it is bringing more than darker mornings and the sudden urge to put the heating on.

A number of employment-rights changes are due to take effect during the month, with more reforms following later, so September is a good time for employers to have a quick look at what may apply to their business.

It does not need to become a huge job. A simple check of what is changing, who needs to know and whether any workplace policies or processes need updating can make things much easier when October arrives.

Minimum wage can look straightforward on paper, but there can be more to check than the hourly rate alone.

A new National Minimum Wage naming round has identified around 660 employers that underpaid workers, with millions of pounds being repaid to employees and further penalties issued.

Sometimes the issue can come from things like deductions for uniforms or work-related costs, hours not being recorded correctly, unpaid time around shifts or salary sacrifice arrangements that reduce pay below the required level.
It is a useful reminder that minimum wage checks should look at the whole calculation, not just the rate showing on the payroll system.

A little time spent reviewing the detail can help make sure employees are being paid correctly and prevent much bigger problems later on.

Did you know? Today is the closing date for HMRC’s call for evidence on PAYE Settlement Agreements.

HMRC has been gathering feedback on how PSAs work in practice and how employers decide what expenses and benefits should be included.

If your business already operates a PSA, it is also a good time to look ahead to the next deadline. Electronic payments for 2025/26 need to reach HMRC by 22 October, so September gives you a useful window to check the agreement, calculations and payment details before then.

Getting the details organised now can help avoid a last-minute rush in October.
