MTD for Income Tax: What’s Changing from April 2026

A simple guide for sole traders & landlords

From 6 April 2026, HMRC is introducing the next stage of Making Tax Digital (MTD). This affects how certain individuals keep records and report their income.

This guide explains who is affected and what will change.

---

Who is affected from April 2026

You will need to follow the MTD rules from 6 April 2026 if:

• You are a sole trader or landlord, and
• Your total business and/or property income is over £50,000 per year
(this is gross income, not profit)

If your income is below £50,000, you will not be affected until a later date.

---

What you will need to do

From April 2026, if you are in scope, you must:

1. Keep digital records

You’ll need to use HMRC‑compatible software to record your income and expenses.

2. Send quarterly updates

Instead of one annual tax return, you’ll send four quarterly submissions showing your income and expenses for each period.

3. Submit an End of Period Statement (EOPS)

This finalises the figures for each business or property income source.

4. Submit a Final Declaration

This replaces the Self Assessment tax return.
It confirms all your income for the year and calculates your tax.

---

What is not changing

• Tax payment dates stay the same
(31 January and 31 July)
• How your tax is calculated stays the same
• You will still be able to claim the same expenses and allowances
