Pensions and inheritance tax: a change worth knowing about

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds will count towards an estate for inheritance tax. The Budget on 28 October kept that date.

If you have a pension, it is a good time to check who you have named to receive it, and how it fits with your Will.

Budget 2026: savings, ISAs and pensions

Budget points that may matter if you save or have a pension:

• The cash ISA limit stays at £20,000. The planned cut for under-65s is not going ahead.
• From April 2027, savings interest outside an ISA will be taxed at 24% basic, 44% higher and 49% additional rate.
• From April 2027, people above State Pension age with total income up to £13,036.40 in 2027/28 will pay no income tax, under a new Pension Tax Allowance.
• From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds will count towards an estate for inheritance tax.
