Do I actually need to complete a Self Assessment tax return? 🤔

It’s a question we get asked a lot - and the answer depends on your individual circumstances.

You may need to complete one if you’re self-employed, a partner in a business partnership, or receive certain income that hasn’t already been taxed, such as income from property, investments or overseas.

There are other circumstances where Self Assessment may apply too, so if you’re unsure, it’s always worth checking rather than assuming.

📅 Self Assessment deadlines are creeping up, so here’s your reminder!

If you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return, there are a few important HMRC dates to have in your diary:

5 October 2026 – Deadline to register for Self Assessment
31 October 2026 – Deadline for paper tax returns
31 January 2027 – Deadline to file your online tax return and pay any tax owed

And just to be clear - these are HMRC’s deadlines, not ours! We’d always recommend getting everything sorted well before then rather than leaving it until the last minute.
