There could be something from your past lurking in the shadows… 👻

And no, we're not talking about ghosts.

If you've changed employers several times during your career, you may have built up workplace pensions with different providers. After a few house moves and years without checking them, it can be easy to lose track.

This Halloween, why not do a little pension ghost hunting?

🔹 Make a list of your previous employers.
🔹 Search old emails and paperwork for pension statements.
🔹 Check whether providers have your current address and contact details.
🔹 If you're still missing one, try the government's free Pension Tracing Service.

Finding an old pension could give you a more complete picture of what you've accumulated and whether you're on track for the retirement you want.

And if you find several old pensions, don't automatically consolidate them. Check their charges, benefits and features first, as transferring won't always be appropriate.

With unused pension pots set to form part of many estates for Inheritance Tax purposes from 6 April 2027, it's understandable that some people are considering withdrawing money sooner rather than later.

However, taking your lump sum early isn't always the most tax-efficient option.

Before making a decision, it's worth asking yourself:

🔹 Will my estate actually be liable for Inheritance Tax?
🔹 Could withdrawing money create an Income Tax bill?
🔹 Are there other ways to manage my estate more tax-efficiently?
🔹 How could taking a large lump sum affect my retirement income?
🔹 What do I plan to do with the money once it's leaves my pension?

The right approach will depend on your circumstances, your retirement plans, and your wider estate planning objectives.

Before making any irreversible decisions, it's worth taking the time to understand all of your options.

If you'd like to discuss how the upcoming changes could affect your retirement plan, please get in touch 👇

It's time for another Ask the Planner, where we answer some of the questions we're regularly asked about financial planning.

This month:

“𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝟲𝟬?”

There's no single age when someone has saved “enough” to retire. Whether 60 is realistic depends on the life you want to fund and the resources you have available.

We'd start by looking at things such as your expected spending, pensions, savings and investments, any other sources of income and whether your expenditure is likely to change throughout retirement.

Then cashflow modelling can help us bring those figures together. For example, we can model what could happen if you retired at 60 rather than 65, spent more during the early years of retirement, helped your children financially or faced an unexpected expense later in life.

That can turn “Can I retire at 60?” into a much more useful conversation about what needs to happen to make your preferred retirement achievable.

Have a question you'd like us to answer in next month's Ask the Planner? Drop it in the comments below 👇

Have you ever wondered what it would take to step away from work for a year and travel?

For some people, the idea of giving up a regular salary can be the scariest part 👻

But rather than assuming a career break isn't affordable, you can put some numbers around it.

Start by working out how much you'd need for the year itself, including travel and everyday spending. Then factor in the expenses that won't disappear while you're away, alongside an emergency fund for the unexpected.

It's also worth considering the longer-term impact. What happens to your pension contributions while you're away? How much money would you want waiting for you when you return? And how long might it take to find your next role?

Cashflow modelling can bring those figures together and show how taking a year out could affect your finances over the longer term. You might discover you need another couple of years to prepare. Or you might find you're in a better position than you thought.

If there's something you'd love to take time out to do, we can help you understand whether your finances could make it possible 👇

If you have people who depend on you financially, it's worth considering what would happen if they no longer had your income.

Two common options are life insurance and family income benefit, but they work in different ways.

🔹 Life insurance usually pays a lump sum that could help repay a mortgage, clear debts, or provide financial security.

🔹 Family income benefit typically provides a regular monthly income for a set period, helping your family cover ongoing living costs.

For some families, one option may be suitable. For others, a combination of both could provide the right level of protection.

The most important thing is making sure your protection reflects your family's needs and circumstances.

If you'd like to review your protection arrangements or discuss the options available, please get in touch 👇

Six months travelling, a year at home with your children, time out to care for a family member, or perhaps you simply want a break after years of working.

There are plenty of good reasons to take some time away from your career.

If you're planning a career break, however, it's worth looking beyond the cost of the time off itself.

While you're away from work, employer pension contributions may stop and your own contributions could change too. A longer break could also affect your National Insurance record, depending on your circumstances.

Before taking time out, you could check your latest pension statement, find out what happens to your workplace pension while you're away and review your National Insurance record.

It can also be useful to model the career break as part of your wider financial plan. You can then see what effect the time away could have on your longer-term goals and whether there are any steps worth taking before or after your break.

A career break can be part of the plan. The important thing is understanding what it means for your finances before you go.

If you're considering some time away from work and would like to understand how it could affect your longer-term plans, please get in touch 👇

You can spend years planning for retirement, but living it for the first time can tell you things a spreadsheet can't.

Perhaps you're spending more on travel than expected but less on everyday expenses. You might realise you want to work occasionally, help your family financially or bring forward something you'd planned for much later, that's why your retirement date isn't the end of your financial planning.

During your first year, keep an eye on what you're actually spending compared with what you'd planned. Review where your retirement income is coming from and consider whether withdrawals are working as expected, then take those real figures back to your financial plan.

Your plan can be adjusted as you discover what retirement actually looks like for you.

If you've recently retired and would like to review how your first year compares with the plan, please get in touch 👇

If you know you eventually want some of your wealth to pass to your family, you may decide that you'd rather help them while you're still here to see the difference it makes.

Lifetime gifting can also play a role in estate planning and, in some circumstances, could help reduce a future Inheritance Tax bill.

However, giving money away solely for tax reasons could leave you short later in life. Your own financial security needs to come first.

Our latest carousel looks at some of the things to understand before making significant gifts 👇
