What an incredible event! 👏

The Matthew Wilkes Wealth Management team was proud to take part in the **My Virtual Mission Challenge 2026**, alongside teams from across the UK.

The results speak for themselves:

🏃‍♂️ 177 participants
📍 12,187.26 miles travelled
💙 £104,518.49 raised through fundraising and matched giving (and still rising daily!)

Across the wider St. James's Place community, an amazing **£209,126.98** has been raised so far to support many deserving charities throughout the UK.

While the numbers are impressive, what really made this event special was the spirit shown by everyone involved. The determination, inspiring stories, photos shared along the way, and just a touch of healthy competition created a genuine sense of community, despite the challenge being entirely virtual.

A special mention goes to Amanda, who was keen to point out that she finished an impressive **5th overall**! 🏅 Matthew was quick to remind her that it was the taking part that counted — and more importantly, the significant difference the fundraising will make to the many small charities that will benefit from the money raised.

A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated, donated, supported, and cheered us on. Together, we've created lasting memories and helped make a real difference.

Approaching retirement: what is the right time to de-risk?

De-risking strategies may involve broader diversification of your investments and regular reviews of your portfolio to help manage risk.
Selling investments during a market dip can harm long-term growth. Having a cash buffer set aside can help you avoid this.
The right time to de-risk depends on your goals and need for income as well as your attitude to risk – it is about finding the right balance.

Moving from decades of building wealth to relying on investments for income is a significant transition. At this point, many people begin to think more carefully about risk, particularly how much of it they are comfortable taking.

Saving and investing for children and grandchildren

Most long-term investment options for children and grandchildren, such as junior ISAs, personal pensions and accounts held in trust, are subject to specific access rules.

Savings accounts may be more suitable, particularly if money is likely to be needed in the short term.

Parents and grandparents should consider making full use of a child’s available allowances where appropriate, while keeping their own estate planning goals in mind.

Many parents worry that their children will struggle to find their financial feet in the current environment. Concerns include the flagging jobs market and inadequate retirement savings. Meanwhile, high house prices make it increasingly difficult to take the first step onto the property ladder. Thes...

Yesterday, Matthew attended a local “Well Walk” event, meeting fellow local businesses and supporting the fantastic charity 21 Together

Despite the heavy rain, spirits stayed high — although Matthew’s dog Murphy ended up absolutely soaked by the end of the walk! A great community event for a very worthwhile cause.

Fixed rate or tracker? Choosing the right mortgage in uncertain times

Fixed rates appeal to buyers who need the certainty of knowing what they will be paying every month.
The rate on a tracker mortgage is directly linked to any changes in the Bank of England base rate. This means the mortgage rate may go up and down during the term.
Comparing multiple lenders and deals and acting early can improve your chances of accessing a competitive mortgage rate.

But market expectations are now that the base rate will rise during 2026. This is because inflation is likely to go up due to increased oil prices caused by the prolonged conflict in Iran. The Bank of England uses interest rates as a tool to control rising inflation.
