Earlier this year, one of our Private Clients experienced a deeply distressing burglary at their home. That night, at 10:30pm, Jack from our Private Clients team was already on the phone with them, making sure they had someone to talk to and guiding them through those first difficult hours.

Over the days that followed, Jack stayed in touch to check how they were coping and keep them updated. A loss assessor was on site within the week to help start putting things right.

Here’s what they told us:

🌾 Save the date! 🌾

Open Farm Sunday returns Sunday 7th June 2026, celebrating 20 years of connecting people with farming, food and the countryside. 🚜🐑

It’s a fantastic family day out – step onto a real working farm, meet the farmers behind our food, and discover how farming works.

Behind the scenes, farms rely on a wide network of local trades businesses, from machinery repairs and construction to electrical work, all helping keep operations running day to day.

But for many, tool and equipment theft remains a real and ongoing challenge, especially in more rural or isolated locations.

More than 7 in 10 tradespeople surveyed by NFU Mutual in January 2025 had experienced tool or equipment theft in the previous year, often causing disruption far beyond the immediate cost.

🚨 Oil theft is becoming more common

Rising fuel costs have made domestic oil tanks an increasingly attractive target especially in rural areas where tanks are often stored outside and out of sight.

Making your property harder to access is one of the most effective deterrents. Here are some simple steps to help prevent oil theft 👇

✔️ Install a lockable oil tank cap
✔️ Use security lighting around the tank
✔️ Fit a smart oil monitor to alert you to sudden drops
✔️ Keep tanks hidden from view where possible
✔️ Remove nearby ladders or tools that could be misused
✔️ Use fencing to deter access
✔️ Regularly inspect and monitor for unexpected changes
