After a fairly subdued summer for precious metals, gold has made a strong start to August.

At the beginning of the month, the gold price was around £3,036 per ounce. By mid-August, it was trading at around £3,240 — an increase of almost 7% in just over two weeks.

So, what has changed?

One of the key factors has been recent US economic data. July’s Non-Farm Payrolls report showed that the US economy lost 23,000 jobs, falling well below expectations of an increase of around 80,000.

That weaker labour market data has led markets to reassess expectations around the possible direction of US interest rates. Lower interest rates can sometimes support gold and silver, as they may reduce the appeal of interest-bearing assets.

The US Dollar has also come under pressure. Because gold and silver are priced globally in US Dollars, a weaker Dollar can help support precious metals prices, particularly for buyers using other currencies.

Geopolitical uncertainty remains another factor. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have continued to add uncertainty to financial markets, although the US Dollar has not strengthened in response as much as it has during some previous periods of instability.

There are also wider market concerns to watch, including the rapid rise of AI-related company stocks and the ongoing issue of government debt in both the US and UK. If confidence in wider markets shifts, this can influence how investors view assets such as gold and silver.

Silver has also benefited from the recent move in precious metals, although silver is influenced by both investment demand and its role in industry and technology.

For now, gold and silver appear to be on a more positive trajectory than they were at the start of the summer. However, markets can change quickly, and stronger future economic data could shift expectations again.

As always, gold and silver prices can move both up and down.

You do not need to have a large holding to speak to us about selling. Some customers sell a single coin, while others part with larger collections, inherited pieces or multiple bullion items.

Whether it is one item or several, Atkinsons can help make the process clear, professional and easy to understand: https://bit.ly/3Tvbeku

First introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987, the Gold Britannia has become one of the UK’s most recognised bullion coins.

The design features Britannia, the female personification of Britain, often shown with her trident, shield, and olive branch, symbols of strength, protection, and peace.

The 1oz Gold Britannia contains one troy ounce of gold, and modern versions are struck in 999.9 fine gold. For UK residents, Britannia bullion coins are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax due to their status as legal British currency.

Beyond its gold content, the Britannia is also valued for its heritage, collectability, recognisable design, and modern security features.

A coin that brings together history, craftsmanship, and tangible value in one iconic piece. You can shop the full range here at: https://bit.ly/4xUMySk

Large gold bars can be an appealing option for buyers who want to hold more gold in a simple, compact form. One of the main benefits is that larger bars often carry a lower premium compared with smaller bars or coins, meaning more of the price is focused on the gold content itself.

The trade-off is flexibility. A large bar is less easy to divide, gift, or sell in smaller amounts, and storage and insurance become more important as the value increases. For some buyers, large bars make perfect sense. For others, smaller bars or coins may feel more practical.

So much of what we own now exists on a screen. Banking, savings, investments, pensions, payments, most of it is managed through apps, logins and online accounts.

And while that has made life much more convenient, it also explains why physical assets still appeal to so many people.

Gold and silver - you can hold them. Store them. Gift them. Pass them down. They are not just numbers on a screen or figures in an online account.

For some people, that tangibility is part of the appeal.

Precious metals are often considered as one part of a wider portfolio, not instead of everything else, but alongside other assets as something physical, recognisable and real.

In an increasingly digital world, there is still something reassuring about owning something you can actually hold in your hand.

Do you think physical assets feel more important now than they used to?
