Could you buy your lunch with a Gold Britannia?...Technically yes. Financially… terrible idea.

A 1oz Gold Britannia is UK legal tender with a face value of £100, but the gold inside it is worth considerably more than that.

So while you could technically use it at face value, you’d be giving up far more value than your lunch is likely to cost.

Its legal-tender status is much more relevant for another reason: qualifying Britannias are currently CGT-exempt for UK residents.

Interesting legal quirk? Yes. Sensible way to pay for a sandwich? Definitely not.
