💡 Self Assessment Top Tip 2026

Getting organised throughout the year makes tax time much easier.

✔ Use a separate business bank account such as Monzo or Tide to keep business and personal transactions separate.

✔ Keep on top of your bookkeeping using software such as Xero or Sage, which can help you track income and expenses as you go.

✔ Store receipts and invoices digitally rather than leaving them in a drawer until year-end.

A little organisation each month can save hours of stress when it comes to preparing your accounts and tax return.

If you need help getting set up or staying on track, feel free to get in touch.

Firstly, THANK YOU to all my amazing clients for keeping me so busy.

I’m currently fully booked for regular bookkeeping work until the back end of the year, with only a very limited number of spaces becoming available for new clients.

If you’re a small business owner thinking about getting your books in order before year-end or tax season chaos hits… now is definitely the time to start planning ahead 📅

One thing I’ve noticed recently is how much banks like Monzo, Revolut and other business banking apps are improving their bookkeeping features 👏

Some really useful tools include:
✔️ Instant spending notifications
✔️ Receipt uploads straight from your phone
✔️ Expense categorising
✔️ Invoice/payment tracking
✔️ Separate pots/spaces for VAT & tax
✔️ Easy exports for accountants/bookkeepers

These tools are brilliant for helping business owners stay organised and keep better records throughout the year 👍

BUT… software can only do so much 👀

A good bookkeeper still helps with:
🔹 Making sure everything is coded correctly
🔹 Keeping you compliant
🔹 Spotting costly mistakes
🔹 Cashflow awareness
🔹 VAT accuracy
🔹 Saving you hours of admin stress

Think of the apps as helpful assistants… not replacements 😊

If you’d like to secure one of my remaining spaces for later this year, feel free to message me now before my diary closes completely 📩

📢 Payroll Changes from 1st April – Are You Ready?

The new tax year brings important payroll updates that every employer needs to be aware of 👇

💷 National Minimum Wage increases
📊 Statutory pay increases (SMP, SSP, etc.)
📉 National Insurance thresholds and changes

If your payroll isn’t updated correctly, it could lead to:
❌ Underpaying staff
❌ HMRC penalties
❌ Compliance issues

Now is the time to make sure everything is set up correctly for the new tax year ✅

If you’re unsure or want peace of mind that your payroll is compliant and running smoothly, I’m here to help.

📢 Self-Employed & Landlords – Key Tax Changes Still Affecting You in 2026

While there aren’t many new changes for April 2026, recent updates are still impacting how much tax you pay 👇

💷 Class 2 National Insurance abolished
Previously a flat weekly charge (£3.45 per week), this is no longer payable. If your profits are above £12,570, you still receive NI credits automatically.

📉 Class 4 National Insurance reduced
Reduced from 9% to 8% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 - meaning lower tax for many self-employed individuals.

📊 Tax year basis now applies to all businesses
Previously, businesses could use their own accounting year end. Now, all profits must be reported in line with the tax year (6 April – 5 April).

💸 Payments on account still catch people out
Tax is still paid in advance (January & July), based on the previous year, not your current income, which can cause cash flow pressure.

These aren’t brand new for 2026, but they are still widely misunderstood and could affect your tax bill.

🚨 Making Tax Digital (MTD) is coming – are you ready?🚨

From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords earning over £50,000 will need to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

👉 This means:
✔️ Keeping digital records
✔️ Submitting quarterly updates to HMRC
✔️ Using compatible software (like Xero)

⏳ The deadline to get prepared is approaching, and leaving it too late could lead to stress, errors, or penalties.

If you’re unsure whether this applies to you or need help getting set up, I can guide you through it step by step.

📊 Making Tax Digital — Deadlines Made Simple

I’ve created a simple poster showing the key MTD deadlines for the 2026–2027 tax year so you can clearly see when updates and payments are due without all the HMRC jargon!

👉 Quarterly updates DO NOT mean quarterly tax payments

You normally only pay tax on: 31 January
& 31 July (payments on account if applicable)

Who needs to follow MTD for Income Tax?

From April 2026 you must use MTD if you are self-employed or a landlord with turnover over £50,000

From April 2027 this drops to £30,000
(Combined turnover from all self-employment + property income)

You’ll need: ✔ MTD compatible software
✔ Digital records
✔ Quarterly submissions to HMRC
✔ Year end final declaration

If you’re unsure whether this affects you..it probably does 😅

Setting it up early avoids penalties and stress later.
📩 Message me if you want help getting MTD ready, switching to software, or ongoing bookkeeping & accounts support
