📉 Tax Loss Selling — a year-end planning consideration

We covered this in Episode 67, and this infographic is a useful companion to that segment.

The short version: when an investment in a non-registered account is worth less than you paid, selling it realizes a capital loss that can be applied against capital gains — this year, carried back up to three years, or carried forward indefinitely.

A few things worth keeping in mind 👇
🔍 It generally applies to non-registered accounts only
🔁 The superficial loss rule can deny the loss if you — or an affiliated person — repurchase the investment
📅 Year-end timing matters, so check the applicable trade deadline
📊 An investment being down doesn't automatically mean it should be sold

🎓 Your child is heading to school — how do you withdraw from the RESP?

Two withdrawal types. The difference matters 👇

💰 EAP = grants + growth → taxed to the student, who is typically in a lower tax bracket
🏦 PSE = your contributions → not taxable, tax was already paid

📌 Consider drawing EAP first, while your student's income is low. Unused grants can be clawed back.

Your TFSA isn't always tax-free 👇

📊 Day trading — CRA can call it a business and tax the whole thing. The courts agreed.
🇺🇸 US dividends — 15% withheld before it hits your account. RRSPs are exempt. TFSAs aren't.
🛂 Dual citizen? The IRS doesn't recognize the TFSA at all.
