In some ways, the past year and a half has felt like a 100-year flood (or at least a quarter century flood) for DM equity mandates. Just as Apple must contend with its own version of “AI-flation”, our diversified, cash-flow focused approach to investment temporarily fell out of relative favour in the US, as investors have become almost singularly focused on the companies driving and supplying the buildout of the artificial intelligence backbone.

With AI-related stocks dominating both the business news cycle and S&P 500 performance, it’s not surprising that many high quality names have been overlooked despite posting solid results. This is the case for several of the positions in DM US Equity, a profile which is exemplified by Visa Inc., a company we’ve held since the year it went public. In its recently released Q1-26 earnings report, the company handily beat analyst estimates for income and posted its largest revenue increase since 2022. As per the chart below, Visa has been a prodigious grower of free cash flow throughout its history and, despite the purported threats of crypto, buy now-pay-later services, and other fintech innovations, that growth rate has not slowed in recent years.

One of the complaints about the S&P 500’s rise last year following its tariff induced plunge in the spring was that the climb was driven by a very small number of stocks, especially those linked to AI and other new economy industries. The first weeks of 2026 saw a reversal of this trend, with participation broadening across the index and previously disregarded names catching a bid. Since the onset of the US military operation in Iran, however, the market has reverted to its hyper-focused ways, with gains concentrated in the semiconductor space and select technology companies — in fact, so far this year, semiconductor stocks have accounted for more than half of the S&P 500’s gain.

If Steve Jobs was a visionary, conjuring products that consumers didn’t know they needed but soon couldn’t live without, Tim Cook was an operator, tasked with optimizing the production of those goods and ensuring that they were as profitable as they were appealing. During his time as Apple CEO, Cook more than succeeded in his designated role, which helped to drive the company’s market capitalization from about $350 billion in 2011 to more than $4 trillion today. That said, it’s not as though innovation was abandoned over the past decade and a half, with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods introduced during the period. As well, it was under Cook’s guidance that the company introduced a services ecosystem — including the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Pay — which now brings in $100 billion in annual revenue and operates at a 75% gross margin.

Last week, we were proud to support Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland at the Art of Mentorship event as presenting sponsors.

It was a memorable evening, highlighted by powerful stories and a genuine sense of connection among everyone in attendance. Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, over $300,000 was raised to help empower and support young women through mentorship.

A special thank you to the organizers and all who attended for making such a meaningful impact. We’re honoured to be part of a community that shows up in such a big way.

Whether you are (or were) a Venezuelan politico, a software engineer, or anyone who relies on the safe passage of hydrocarbons through a narrow channel in the Persian Gulf, the first quarter of 2026 was one of grave consequence. For investors, the implications of recent weeks and what might lie ahead undoubtedly seem just as harrowing.

Over the weekend, Dixon Mitchell sponsored InspireHealth Supportive Cancer Care's 10th Annual Rain Walk, a community event that brought people together across British Columbia to raise funds and awareness for individuals and families affected by cancer.

As presenting sponsor, Dixon Mitchell was pleased to help support an initiative that provides meaningful resources to those navigating cancer. Events like Rain Walk play an important role in funding InspireHealth’s free supportive care programs, which offer services such as exercise therapy, nutrition guidance, stress management, and counselling to help improve quality of life during and after treatment.

Supporting organizations that strengthen the communities we serve is an important part of Dixon Mitchell’s commitment to making a positive local impact. It was inspiring to see so many participants, volunteers, and supporters come together in support of this year’s Rain Walk and the important work InspireHealth continues to do.
